YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County residents who have old, unused household appliances and metal to get rid of soon will be able to do so.
The county recycling division, known as the Green Team, will hold its annual appliance collection roundup next Saturday through May 8. Items can be dropped of at one of six collection sites around the county, said Director Timothy Berlekamp.
He said the household appliance and metal collection has grown considerably over each of the past five years or so.
"Last year, in Boardman alone, we had more than 400 units that we removed Freon from," Berlekamp said. "That doesn't even include all the other items that were dropped off."
Items that will be accepted include refrigerators, stoves, clothes washers, air conditioners, dishwashers, freezers, dehumidifiers, microwave ovens, copper wiring, plumbing, hot water tanks, aluminum siding and other small metal appliances.
Berlekamp said there is no charge for having Freon removed from the appliances. Green Team staff members have been trained to remove and dispose of the liquid, he said.
