PREP BASEBALL Gruszecki keys Bears' TCL win; Clippers rally



Girard improved to 4-1 by beating Campbell, while Chaney defeated Warren JFK.
SEBRING -- Leetonia pitcher Kyle Gruszecki struck out 15 Sebring batters, surrendering just one earned run, to lift the Bears to a 10-2 victory in a Tri-County League game Thursday.
Gruszecki (1-1) added two hits for the Bears (2-3, 2-2), while Cody Tittle added three hits. Justin Baker, Anthony Danko and Jamie Kegelmyer also had two hits.
Columbiana 17, Crestview 7
COLUMBIANA -- Crestview took a 4-0 lead before Columbiana scored 12 runs and never looked back.
The Clippers' 11 hits included a home run by Brian Gustufson and a double and two singles by David Vitko, who drove in three runs.
Andy Walton led the Rebels (1-5) with a pair of singles, and he drove in four runs.
Chaney 13, Warren JFK 4
WARREN -- Dave Baco and Lou Kopachy each had first-inning doubles to help the Cowboys (4-1) take a 6-0 lead.
Aaron Boris collected three of Chaney's 16 hits.
Steve Orlosky homered for JFK (1-2-1).
Niles 5, Salem 2
NILES -- Chris Utterbeck had two hits and two RBIs to lead Niles in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Jeff Claar picked up the win for Niles (3-1, 3-1 MAC), striking out six and walking four.
Grant Sevek had two hits and scored a run for Salem (4-2, 0-2).
Struthers 6, Hubbard 5
HUBBARD -- The Wildcats (1-5) pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-2 lead.
Brian Walton led Struthers with a double.
Andrew Chick led the Eagles (0-3), going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Yo. Christian 9, Lowellville 0
STRUTHERS -- Mike Byrdy threw a five-hitter and Aaron Agresta had a triple and a single for the Eagles (2-0).
The Rockets fell to 0-5.
Ravenna 8, Mineral Ridge 2
MINERAL RIDGE -- Andy Kluge and Joey Powell each doubled for the Ravens (1-3).
Tim Grantz and John Dubic each hit doubles for the Rams (2-7).
Newton Falls 11, Liberty 5
LIBERTY -- Nick Bjelac had two hits to lead Newton Falls in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Randy Burgett and Marc Doblanski each had two hits for Liberty (0-2, 0-2 TAC), which lost starting pitcher Brian Jones to a knee injury in the first inning.
Girard 13, Campbell 3
GIRARD -- The Indians (4-1) put the game out of reach with a six-run rally in the fourth inning.
Ryan Collins went 4-for-4 and scored three times. Greg Barton hit a double, two singles, drove in three runs and scored twice.
The Red Devils fell to 4-3.
West Branch 4, Minerva 1
MINERVA -- West Branch pitcher Andy Todor tossed a complete game three-hitter to lead the Warriors in a Northeastern Buckeye Conference game.
Todor (2-0) had 13 strikeouts and one walk, surrendering his only run on a homer by Keanon Ramond in the fifth.
Justin Grove and John Wallace each had two hits for the Warriors (4-3, 2-2). Minerva fell to 0-5.
Mathews 10, Bloomfield 3
BLOOMFIELD -- Cory Fiest (1-0) worked six innings, with seven strikeouts, to earn his first win of the season.
Tyler Stanton, Kevin Forsythe and Matt Weymer each had two hits for the Mustangs (4-0, 3-0 Northeastern Athletic Conference).
