DISTRICT SOFTBALL Poland clinches tourney title



Ursuline is 8-0 for the first time in school history.
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Poland High softball team clinched the Grand Strand Classic title on Thursday.
Mallory Conger (4-0) scattered eight hits, pitching a complete game, as the Bulldogs defeated Massillon 9-2.
Jess Modic hit a double, two singles, drove in two runs and scored three times. Every batter in the starting lineup for the Bulldogs had a least one hit.
The Bulldogs were to play Cocke County (Tenn.) today.
Poland 8, Victor 6
VICTOR, N.C. -- Kristy Hertz (1-0) scattered eight hits to pick up the win. Steffi Graf hit a double and two singles and scored three times to pace Poland (8-1).
Nickie Steger led Victor (3-1) with two doubles. She scored twice and stole two bases.
Ursuline 5, Struthers 3
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline pitcher Maureen Cearfoss improved to 7-0, facing the minimum in six of her seven innings, as the Irish started the season 8-0 for the first time in school history. Staci Ziobert added a double for Ursuline.
Allison Ginnetti had two hits for Struthers (1-4).
Niles 9, Salem 3
NILES -- Kelly Leonard had a double and two RBIs, and the Red Dragons used a five-run second to take control in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Lisa Brown and Sarah Fenstermaker each had two hits, including a double, for Niles (2-2, 2-2). Ashley Lokash also had two hits.
Stephanie Szabat had two hits, including a double, for the Quakers.
Mooney 8, Can. Central Catholic 6Mooney 7, Can. Central Catholic 1
CANTON -- Mooney, behind 6-4 in the first game, rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth inning to prevail.
Colleen Courtney (3-0) came on in relief in the third inning with runners on first and third and nobody out. She retired the side and went on to pick up the win.
Dana Palazzo hit a double and two singles, while Stefanie Zizzo hit a double, two singles and drove in three runs for the Cardinals.
In the second contest, Mooney jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning, then scored four more runs in the fourth.
Petrina Morocco (2-0) allowed only two hits as she pitched a complete game, with three strikeouts, to pick up the win.
Palazzo hit a double and two singles and drove in two runs, while Gina Brunetti and Mara Palombaro each had two hits for the Cardinals (8-1).
Autumn Grove collected both of those hits for the Crusaders (2-4).
