Tyco leader to speak at Grove City commencement



Breen joined Tyco after executives were charged with bilking the company.
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City College alumnus and Tyco International Ltd. leader Ed Breen will give the 124th Commencement address at his alma mater at 10:30 a.m. May 15 in an outdoor ceremony on the quad.
Breen, former president and chief operating officer of Motorola Inc., will address about 550 graduates.
Breen, a member of the class of 1978, serves as the chairman and chief executive of Tyco International Ltd., a company that has seen turbulent timesand 2003.
Breen was hired after the company searched for a leader to replace Dennis Kozlowski, the chairman and CEO who was fired in June 2002.
Kozlowski, Mark Swartz, chief financial officer, and Mark Belnick, chief counsel, were accused of bilking the company out of $600 million.
Earlier this month, New York State Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus declared a mistrial in the six-month Kozlowski-Swartz trial, citing outside pressure on a juror to acquit.
Tyco International is a leader in electronics, telecommunications, fire and security services, health care services and other fields.
Breen's background
Before his appointment at Tyco, Breen began with Motorola in January 2000 when General Instrument Corp. and Motorola merged. At General Instrument, Breen had served as chairman, president and CEO.
After the merger, Breen was named executive vice president of Motorola and president of Motorola's broadband communications sector. Two years later, he was named Motorola president and CEO.
At Grove City, Breen was a business administration and economics major, as well as a member of the wrestling team and the Beta Sigma fraternity.
He is married to the former Lynn Branstner, also a Grove City College graduate of 1978. They have three children and live in New Hope, Pa.
