YSU Governor names two to trustees board

Gov. Bob Taft announced the appointments Tuesday.
COLUMBUS -- The head of a philanthropic organization and a businessman have been appointed to Youngstown State University's Board of Trustees.
Gov. Bob Taft announced Tuesday the trustee appointments of Donald Cagigas, president of the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way, and Scott R. Schulick of the Butler Wick Trust Co.
Cagigas' term ends May 1, 2008, the governor's office said. Cagigas, who is also chief professional officer for the United Way, fills the unexpired term of F.W. Knecht, who died earlier this year.
Their backgrounds
Schulick, of Youngstown, was appointed to a full, nine-year term. He will replace Joseph S. Nohra, whose term expires May 1.
"It's exciting to be able to continue my involvement with the university," said Schulick, who earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from YSU in 1994 and a master's in business administration in 1996.
In the future, Schulick said, the board will likely work on enhancing public and private funding sources of the university.
This will be Schulick's second tenure as a YSU trustee. He served on the board from 1993 to 1995 while he was on campus as a student. A graduate of Ursuline High School, Schulick has been with Butler Wick & amp; Co., since 1994, first as a financial adviser and now as a trust investment officer.
He is the president of the Rotary Club of Youngstown, chair of the investment committee of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and chair of the visual improvements subcommittee/Streetscape Project of the Downtown Youngstown Revitalization Committee. He serves on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown, Community Corrections Association and Park Vista Retirement Community.
Cagigas lives in Poland with his wife, Gloria, and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from YSU in 1963. "I look at this as a great honor to serve my alma mater, which I consider to be one of the most significant organizations in our region," he said.
A native of Farrell, Pa., Cagigas started a career in banking in 1965, and in 1974 became a senior vice president at Bank One in Cleveland. Fifteen years later, he was named chairman and chief executive of Bank One, Youngstown. When the bank consolidated in 1997, Cagigas was named president of the Mahoning Valley region for the new Bank One. He retired from the bank in March 1999.
He serves on the boards of many local organizations, including the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, First Place Bank, Forum Health Holding Co., Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges, Mahoning Valley College Access Program and the YSU Foundation.
Earlier appointment
Earlier this month, Taft appointed William J. Bresnahan of Kinsman, president of Hynes Industries in Youngstown, to the YSU trustees. Bresnahan was appointed for a term ending May 1, 2007. He will fill the unexpired term of Charles B. Cushwa III, who died in December.
