NHL PLAYOFFS New Jersey earns much-needed win

The Devils' 4-2 victory was their first of the series. They still trail 2 games to 1.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- The Philadelphia Flyers' dreams of a sweep have vanished. Now they have to focus on regaining momentum.
The New Jersey Devils' power play woke up Monday night in a 4-2 win that got the defending Stanley Cup champions back in their first-round playoff series against the Flyers.
"It was looking good there for a couple of days," Flyers center Jeremy Roenick said after the Devils cut Philadelphia's lead in the best-of-seven series to 2 games to 1. "To sweep these guys would take a tremendous, tremendous effort for four games."
The Devils will try to tie the series Wednesday night.
The Flyers enjoyed two one-goal leads in Game 3, but they struggled on the penalty kill.
Power play success
During their two wins in Philadelphia, the Flyers killed off all seven New Jersey power plays. On Monday, New Jersey converted three of five chances with the man advantage and got a big game from its top line of Patrik Elias, Scott Gomez and Brian Gionta.
Elias scored twice, Gomez had three assists and Gionta added a third-period goal that gave goaltender Martin Brodeur some breathing room.
"As a line, we said we had to start better," Gomez said. "We talked this morning and we said, 'We have to go from the get-go.' "
The Devils also got a little luck.
Elias' shot late in the second period went past Flyers goaltender Robert Esche off the hip of Philadelphia defenseman Kim Johnsson. The goal gave the Devils their first lead of the series.
"It hit the pants and deflected in," Johnsson said. "It was bad luck."
A matter of luck
Elias said Johnsson was not the target of his shot from the top of the right circle.
"I got lucky with the shot," Elias said. "It just went through there."
Brodeur helped the lead stand up, making 12 of his 23 saves in the final period.
"We're back in it now," Brodeur said. "Those guys were flying high and hopefully we put a little doubt in their minds."
Rookie Paul Martin also scored for New Jersey.
Roenick and Tony Amonte scored for the Flyers.
"I think we're still real confident here," Roenick said. "We're up 2-1 and they got three goals on the power play which was disappointing. Our penalty killing has been really good, and if we play five-on-five, we have a really good chance."
