TRACK AND FIELD Beaver Local's Ferry named MVP



Canfield and Boardman also performed well at the East Palestine Invitational.
EAST PALESTINE -- Beaver Local High's Paula Ferry won the long jump and finished fifth in the high jump to earn field events MVP in the East Palestine Invitational on Saturday at Reid Memorial Stadium.
Ferry's long-jump distance was 17 feet, 2 inches, and her mark in the high jump was 4-8.
Ferry also set a meet record in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing first in 15.2 and breaking the previous mark (15.30) held by Lake's Erin Reese. Ferry was second in the 300 hurdles (48.5) as the Beavers finished in sixth place (39).
Cleveland Heights won the 21-team all-girls meet by scoring 100 points. Canfield was second with 90, and Boardman placed third with 81.
Canfield earned its runner-up finish with the help of first-place finishers Emily Wollet in the 400 (1:01.5), Makenzie Kline in the high jump (5-1) and Andrea Murdoch in the discus (116-2).
Boardman's Jessica Moore was a double winner to help keep her team in contention. She finished first in the 800 (2:25.1) and 1600 (5:24.9).
The Spartans also got a first-place finish from Michelle Bistrica in the 3200 (12:11.1).
Other area athletes winning events were Salem's Ambree Horning in the shot put (39-5) and the relays from Woodrow Wilson and Poland.
The Redmen -- Martina Lyons, Retina Daniels, Sheray Carter and Carla Venable -- captured the 4x100 relay (52.9). The Bulldogs team of Sarah Anderson, Danielle Bova, Kim Brogan and Lauren Fithian won the 4x800 relay (10:26.3).
Erin Kellon of Cleveland Heights was named the running events MVP. She won the 200 (26.0) and 300 hurdles (47.7), was part of Heights' winning 4x200 relay (1:51.2) and finished second in the 100 hurdles (15.2).

MINERAL RIDGE -- Garrettsville Garfield scored 106 1/2 points to win the boys meet, while the Hawken girls totaled 79 1/2 to edge runner-up Crestwood (79).
Ed Collins (Crestwood) and Heather Martain (Newton Falls) won the field events MVPs, while Clayton Watson (Streetsboro) and Angeline Cicero (Warren JFK) were the running MVPs.
Collins won the discus (164-4) and shot put (49-5 1/4), while Martain won the long jump (15-3) and high jump (5-0). Watson finished first in the 1600 (4:52), 3200 (10:22.6) and was part of the winning 4x800 relay (8:44.9). JFK's Cicero won the 300 hurdles in 48.2.
