April 10, 1979: Youngstown Fire Chief Rocco Russo says an accident on the city's North Side that injured three firefighters, one seriously, could have been avoided if the fire department had been notified that North Side Hospital was working on its alarm system. A ladder truck speeding toward what was a false alarm at the hospital collided with a car at W. Rayen and Fifth avenues.
A Girard-Liberty school boundary dispute ends when the Ohio Board of Education rules in Girard's favor, saying students in the Squaw Creek area should attend Girard schools. It was found that some residents were paying taxes to Liberty schools, but sending their children to Girard.
An Ohio House subcommittee delays its funding recommendations for higher education in an attempt to get more money to hold the line on tuitions at the states colleges. A plan by the Board of Regents calls for students to pay $795 per year in tuition; Gov. James A. Rhodes proposes $840.
April 10, 1964: Two large new downtown Youngstown buildings costing about $5 million are expected to be constructed, beginning in the summer. There will be a $2 million Legal Arts Center across from the courthouse and a $3 million mall including a new Cinerama theater on the site of the Palace Theater at the northeast corner of Central Square.
Youngstown area residents have donated $6,764 to the Mahoning Chapter, American Red Cross, to help victims of the Good Friday earthquake in Alaska.
Emanuel Katzman & amp; Co. Inc. bids $157,230, low among seven bids, on the general contract to construct two hangars at the Youngstown Municipal Airport. The hangars will be constructed with city funds and a $104,000 federal grant.
Gov. James A. Rhodes will turn the first shovel of dirt on Interstate Route 80 in Hubbard, marking the first construction in Ohio to create a link with the Keystone Shortway in Pennsylvania.
April 10, 1954: A mother and four children escape from a fire at their home at 30 E. Boston Ave. by climbing down a Youngstown Fire Department ladder. Mrs. Marie DiLoreto and her children were trapped on the second floor of their home by heavy smoke from a basement fire. Neighbors heard their cries for help and called the fire department.
Rosanne Walley is the first girl candidate for East High School's golf squad in the school's history. The 16-year-old sophomore shoots in the low 80s and is a real contender for the No. 4 spot on the squad.
A Soviet military commander writing in the Red army newspaper, Red Star, says the United States of America is no longer safe from attack. "The modern methods of warfare ... deprive the American continent of its former aura of invulnerability," M. Krementsev writes.
April 10, 1929: A proposal that the city acquire 100 additional acres adjoining Lansdowne Field, with the idea that if Youngstown ever outgrows the airport it could be made into a big athletic field, is made by W.L. Buchanan, city council president.
Tommy Raklets, pro at the Mahoning Valley Country Club, is honored with a testimonial dinner after returning from California and Florida, where he played in the winter tournaments, winning the Florida West Coast Open.
