Bruins 2, Canadiens 1
BOSTON -- Patrice Bergeron scored 1:26 into overtime to give Boston a victory over Montreal and lift the Bruins to a 2-0 lead in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Andrew Raycroft stopped 25 shots, and Michael Nylander also scored for the Bruins. Jose Theodore made 17 saves, and Patrice Brisebois had the Canadiens' only goal.
It was 1-1 after two periods and it stayed that way through the third. But just a minute into overtime, Bergeron took a pass from Nylander near center ice and brought the puck into Montreal's zone.
He stickhandled toward the net and made a fake -- or maybe a stumble -- between the circles, then took a wrist shot that went off Theodore's glove before trickling into the net. The Boston players swarmed around him, and the Canadiens headed mournfully to their bench.
The best-of-seven series moves to Montreal for Games 3 and 4 on Sunday and Tuesday.
Avalanche 5, Stars 2
DENVER -- The Dallas Stars were intent on stopping Peter Forsberg's line in Game 2 of their playoff series against Colorado.
Wishful thinking.
The trio of Forsberg, Alex Tanguay and Milan Hejduk combined for two goals and four assists.
Forsberg and Tanguay scored for the second straight game and had an assist each, and Hejduk added two assists to give Colorado a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven-series. Joe Sakic also scored for the second straight game and Dan Hinote added a goal.
Dallas struggled on the road all season and the playoffs have been no exception.
The Stars were 1-for-7 on the power play after going scoreless in five chances in Game 1, and gave up three power-play goals.
Game 3 is Monday in Dallas, where the Stars were 26-7-8 this season.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first nine minutes on Wednesday, Dallas took its first lead in the series on Mike Modano's power-play goal 81/2 minutes in on Friday.
It didn't last long.
Sakic tied it on a power play just 1:03 later, sneaking in for a one-timer on Forsberg's pass from behind the goal.
Then things really heated up.
The crowd and Sakic were furious late in the first period when Tanguay was called for a penalty after bumping into goalie Marty Turco along the sideboards.
Sakic had a heated conversation with one official after the call, but Colorado was able to kill off the penalty.
Dallas was called for too many men on the ice at the end of the power play, and Tanguay took advantage by tipping Rob Blake's shot from near the blue line to put the Avalanche up 2-1 with 2.8 seconds left.
Then it was the Stars' turn to be angry.
Colorado's Teemu Selanne slashed Steve Ott on the back of the legs after the horn sounded, but the officials didn't see it. Dallas forward Bill Guerin did. He went after Selanne and had to be restrained as he skated toward one of the officials.
The Stars' fortunes didn't get any better in the second period.
Forsberg scored 6:48 in on a centering pass that caromed past Turco off the skate of Dallas defenseman Richard Matvichuk.
