Best Bets on TV Tonight

Both AMC and TCM are devoting much of the day to some classic westerns. John Wayne stars in "The Alamo" (4:30 p.m. on TCM), who then competes against himself when "Rooster Cogburn" (5:45 p.m., AMC) airs. Catch Wayne again in "El Dorado" (8 p.m., AMC) and Gary Cooper in "High Noon" (8 p.m., TCM).
With a sequel called "The Whole Ten Yards" opening in theaters this weekend, here's another chance to catch the 2000 original, "The Whole Nine Yards" (8 p.m., CBS). It's a dark comedy starring Matthew Perry as an unhappily married dentist who tries to profit from turning in his hit-man neighbor (Bruce Willis) to the mobsters who want to kill him. Rosanna Arquette plays Perry's scheming wife.
"Tournament of Champions" (8 p.m., Animal Planet) is another big-deal competition for dogs, who have come to be a strong attraction on TV in recent years. Coverage of this event in Portland, Ore., will include behind-the-scenes features and attention to the "lighter side" of the show-dog world.
An investigation of a military training mission that turned deadly pits Capt. Julia Osborne (Connie Nielsen) against tainted DEA agent and former Army man Tom Hardy (John Travolta) in "Basic" (8 p.m., HBO). The lies that they have to sort out tend to make the storyline confusing. Samuel L. Jackson also stars in this 2003 movie.
The story of the disciple who betrayed Jesus was told in a movie that debuted on ABC last month. Tonight, as Christians await tomorrow's Easter celebration, "Judas" (9 p.m., Pax) is repeated. The 2003 movie stars Enrico Lo Verso as Judas and Danny Quinn as Jesus.
"Saturday Night Live" (11:30 p.m., NBC) will be guarding against a "wardrobe malfunction" when Janet Jackson drops by to host. No doubt there will be plenty of references, and perhaps an entire skit, devoted to Super Bowl Boobygate. Have those TiVos ready, just in case.
