Ohio State
Sophomore Ronald Ferris of Austintown earned his first All-America honor on the high bar at the 2004 NCAA Men's Gymnastics championships Sunday at Assembly Hall in Champaign, Ill. Ferris placed fifth as he scored 9.537 points on the high bar.
Thiel
Wrestling coach Craig Thurber was featured in the March 8 issue of Amateur Wrestling News. Written by Dave Suter, the story is an update of a 1985 AWN feature which selected 10 all-time college teams over the course of a year and a half.
Bethany
Kelley Richardson, a senior on the women's basketball team, was named a fifth-team All-American by Women's DIII News. Also, sophomore Mike Drahos of the men's basketball team was picked as honorable mention All-American.
Westminster
Sophomore guard Mark DeMonaco, a graduate of New Castle High, was selected to the ECAC Div. III Southern basketball all-star honorable mention team. He led the league in scoring 18.1 points a game. DeMonaco also was one of 11 Westminster players to win letters. The others were Chris Hatch, a junior guard from South Range; Randall Poindexter, freshman forward, Woodrow Wilson; Brian Fadden, sophomore guard, Mohawk; Dom Joseph, sophomore forward, New Castle; Shane McCullough, sophomore forward, Neshannock; Ed Pagley, junior guard, New Castle; Ryan Hauck, freshman guard, Hampton; Micah Delo, sophomore forward, Ambridge; John Lauterbach, freshman guard, Brentwood; and Pat O'Connor, junior forward, Keystone Oaks.
Mount Vernon Nazarene
Jason Irish, a senior from Lakeview High, helped Mount Vernon Nazarene to a doubleheader sweep of Tiffin recently. Irish pitched the first game (7-3 win) and scattered five hits and struck out seven while walking four and giving up three wins over seven innings. In the nightcap, 6-0 win, Irish went 3-for-4 at the plate to support Mike Laughlin's two-hitter.
Hiram
Jeremy Krol, a junior pitcher from LaBrae High and a transfer from Malone, pitched his first shutout for Hiram with a complete-game three-hitter for a 6-0 win over Wooster It was the fist time Wooster was shut out since March 21, 2002. Krol struck out four and walked three. Krol leads the Terriers with a 3-0- record and 1.77 ERA in three starts, including two complete games Krol has struck out 17 in 201/3 innings.
Wittenberg
Norah Gillam, a junior pitcher from Canfield High, pitched Wittenberg to a 7-1 win over Wilmington in the opener of a doubleheader. Gillam fired a four-hitter. Through the Tigers' first 14 games (7-7 record), Gillam has the most wins on the team with three against two losses in 39 innings, with a 3.59 ERA, 38 strikeouts and 13 walks.
Gregg Carter, a freshman sprinter from Wellsvile High, had a good day in the Roanoke Invitational. Carter won the 100-meter dash in 11.13 seconds, was a member of the winning 4x100 relay team (43.78) and placed third in the 200 (23.31). The week before, Carter was third in the 100 and was a member of the runner-up 4x100 relay (43.41) at the Gerald England Invitational at the University of Indianapolis.
Wooster
Brianne Diorio, a senior from Cardinal Mooney, was Wooster's lone standout in a doubleheader loss (1-0 and 2-1) to Bethany. Diorio went 2-for-6 and drove in the only run. Through 17 games (8-9, 1-2 NCAC), Diorio has the team's third-best batting average (.269 on 14-for-52) with nine runs scored and five RBIs.
John Carroll
Freshman pitcher Mark Sedden (Cardinal Mooney) registered his first career win in John Carroll's 6-4 victory over Mount Union in the first game of a doubleheader. Sedden pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief and didn't allow any hits while striking out one batter and walking two batters. Sedden has a 1-0 record with an 0.00 ERA in three appearances, allowing only two hits. John Carroll is 9-5 and 3-1 in the OAC.
Clarion
Jeff Donston, sophomore infielder from New Castle, has started 12 games and is batting .280 (7-for-25) with four RBIs. Clarion is 8-10, including 1-3 in the PSAC.
Kent State
Matt Sega, a senior infielder and a co-captain from Canfield High, was the team's third-leading hitter as of early last week. Sega was batting .289 on 33-for-115 with four homers, 19 runs scored and 18 RBIs through 37 games (11-16 record, 3-3 MAC).
In softball, Tracie Logar, a senior pitcher from McDonald High, has accounted for three of her team's 10 wins as of early last week. Logar had a 3-3 record and 1.94 ERA with 26 strikeouts and 15 walks in 39.2 innings, as KSU posted a 10-12 record, including 2-1 in the MAC. Logar, a three-year letterman, also is batting .190 on 4-for-21. Julie Kamesky, a junior outfielder and two-year letter winner from Fitch, is batting .143 (2-for-14).
Grove City
Water polo players David Drew and Matt Ziders earned Academic All-America honors from the American Water Polo Coaches Association and the Collegiate Water Polo Association.
