PREP SOFTBALL Banks tosses 1-hitter to guide W. Reserve
Kaili Gehring's two-hitter helped Ridge defeat Lowellville.
BERLIN CENTER -- Stevie Banks threw a one-hitter to lead the Western Reserve High softball team to an 11-0 victory over McDonald in an Inter-County League game Wednesday.
Banks struck out six and walked one for Western Reserve (1-2, 1-0 ICL). Andrea Martin had three hits and three RBIs for Western Reserve, while Quinn McCammon added two hits and three RBIs.
Mineral Ridge 10, Lowellville 1
LOWELLVILLE -- Kaili Gehring pitched a two-hitter, with six strikeouts, for the Rams (2-0, 1-0) in the ICL game. She also had two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. Katie Olive hit three singles and stole a base.
Springfield 8, Union 5
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Heather Snyder doubled twice, and Samantha Cavalier and Courtney Sheely each added a double for the Tigers (2-0).
Chaney 16, Rayen 1
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kristen Bielik had three hits, including a triple and double, for the Cowgirls (2-2) in their win at Pemberton Park. Terra Koontz and Mary Wheland added two hits each. Justine Klopta earned the victory, striking out eight.
Mooney 16, Wilson 1
YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Petrina Morocco and freshman Mimi Vitello combined on a one-hitter for the Cardinals (4-0). Vitello doubled for the Cardinals, who led 8-0 in the first inning and 14-0 in the second. Colleen Courtney had two singles and three RBIs for Mooney.
East Palestine 5, Crestview 4
EAST PALESTINE -- The Bulldogs (2-1, 2-0) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in the Tri-County League game.
Ashley Ehrenberg singled, stole second and scored on a double by Jennessa Greenawalt, who scored the winning run on a single by Jessi Berresford.
Maplewood 3, Lordstown 0
CORTLAND -- Freshman Markie Pozzuto tossed a one-hitter with 17 strikeouts in the Rockets' opener. Brittney Spencer had two hits for Maplewood, while Lordstown pitcher Jen Bennett struck out nine in the loss.
Akron Springfield 9, West Branch 2
BELOIT -- Brittany Roth had three hits, while Melanie Hamilton scattered 10 hits and struck out five to lead Akron Springfield. Bri Benedict, Ellie Geiger and Vana Morgan each had two hits for the Warriors (0-2).
