YOUNGSTOWN -- Cardinal Mooney High boys basketball coach Nick Bellino, at the school since 1991, announced his retirement Wednesday.
Bellino compiled a record of 167 wins and 132 losses as coach for the Cardinals.
The 2003-2004 season was his 33rd as a coach, including service at Warren John F. Kennedy, Howland and Niles. Bellino's teams won eight sectional championships, four district championships and made four regional final appearances.
During his 13-years at Mooney, his squads won two Steel Valley Conference tiles and he was named "coach of the year" by the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association five times.
He also coached both the Mahoning Valley all-star team and Ohio all-star teams to victories in 1998.
Bellino reflected on his coaching career. "There were many great moments but my greatest joy was just having the opportunity to coach at Cardinal Mooney," Bellino said. "To be part of a school where academic excellence and athletic tradition were second to none."
