DISTRICT ROUNDUP Red Dragons rally to drop Struthers, 5-4



Grant Sevek went 3-for-4 to lead Salem past South Range.
NILES -- The Niles High baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to slip past Struthers 5-4 Wednesday at Wilder Field.
Kevin Robertson singled home Mike McGuire with the bases loaded in the final inning.
McGuire led the Red Dragons (2-1) with a pair of hits, while Chris Utterback had a pair of RBIs.
Jimmy Kriebel, Joe Lariccia and Steve Stenglein all had two hits for the Wildcats (0-4).
Salem 9, South Range 4
SALEM -- Grant Sevek went 3-for-4 for the Quakers (2-1).
Salem scored three runs in the first inning, and a three-run third made it 7-3. Greg Rohan doubled twice and scored three times for the Raiders (2-3).
McDonald 16, Western Reserve 9
BERLIN CENTER -- McDonald (1-1, 1-0) scored eight runs in the top of the third inning to take an 11-1 lead in the Inter-County League game.
Mike VanDyke hit a home run and two doubles and drove in six runs for McDonald. He also scored four times.
Josh Yeany led Western Reserve (0-3, 0-3) with two singles and two runs scored.
Mineral Ridge 10, Lowellville 5
STRUTHERS -- Brandon Linert, Chris Ault and John Dubic each singled twice in the Rams' season opener at Cene Park. Linert also earned the win. Dustin Socie singled twice for Lowellville (0-3, 0-1).
Girard 10, Brookfield 3
GIRARD -- Greg Barton led the Indians on both sides of the plate in the Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Barton had two hits and four RBIs and, while playing center field, made an outstanding diving catch in the sixth inning.
Nick Canterino and Dan O'Neill each added two hits for Girard (2-1, 1-0). Joe Castor was the winning pitcher.
Champion 6, Hubbard 3
HUBBARD -- Jake Gross went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Golden Flashes. Champion scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to erase a 2-2 tie.
Ryan Jankewski and Sean McAllen had doubles for Hubbard.
Mathews 6, Southington 2
VIENNA -- Drew Himes hit a two-run single as Mathews (2-0, 1-0 Northeastern Athletic Conference) scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Drew Turner and Paul Belany each had two singles.
Beaver Local 5, West Branch 4
LISBON -- The Beavers (1-2) pushed across two runs in the seventh inning.
Beaver Local took a 3-0 lead in the second inning before the Warriors (0-2) scored four times in the fourth.
Steve Hilliard doubled and drove in two runs for West Branch.
Ryan Lynch doubled twice for the Beavers.
