NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Some Union Township residents will have to go outside their municipality to vote this election.
The Lawrence County Elections Board approved moving the polling place from Madonna Church on Oakland Avenue in Union Township to Wesley United Methodist Church, 1204 West Washington St., New Castle.
Elections Director Marlene Gabriel said Madonna Church is no longer available and no other suitable building could be found in that voting district. She said election law allows them to find a polling place in another municipality as long as it is near the border.
Gabriel said notices will be posted in 10 public places in the township alerting voters to the change.
Reminder
Gabriel also reminded voters that April 20 is the last day to apply for an absentee ballot and those ballots must be returned by 5 p.m. April 23.
Pennsylvania's primary election is April 27.
She noted that a recent decision by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court states that the ballots must be delivered in person or mail to be counted. A third party is no longer allowed to deliver the ballots to the election office, she said.
People who are disabled, elderly and those in nursing homes are exempt from that requirement, Gabriel said.
