PREP SOFTBALL Freshman Courtney helps guide Mooney to win over Liberty



Ursuline pitcher Maureen Cearfoss threw a shutout to beat Western Reserve.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Freshman Colleen Courtney made the most of her first varsity start Tuesday, pitching and hitting the Cardinal Mooney softball team to an 8-3 win over Liberty.
Courtney (1-0) yielded just three singles and three walks with four strikeouts in 61/3 innings of work for the Cardinals (3-0).
Courtney also singled three times.
After opening the third inning with three straight bunt singles, Mooney's Gina Brunetti doubled to break the game open. Mooney scored all of its runs in the frame.
Brunetti added two more singles and two RBIs while Pam Walko had two singles, two RBIs and two runs in a 12-hit attack.
Ursuline 5,Western Reserve 0
BERLIN CENTER -- Alyssandra Parry's two hits included a double for the Irish (3-0).
Courtney Davidson had two hits and Staci Ziobert doubled for Ursuline.
Winning pitcher Maureen Cearfoss (3-0) tossed a five-hitter.
For the Blue Devils (0-2), Chrissy Mitchell and Katie Harmon doubled.
Chaney 5, Campbell 0
YOUNGSTOWN -- Junior Justine Klopta tossed a one-hitter and struck out 12 batters for the Cowgirls (1-2).
Chris Hilbig had two hits and two RBIs while Mary Wheland had two hits and one RBI. Gina Guyer drove in two runs.
For Campbell (0-2), Vicky Steiner singled in the third inning.
Mineral Ridge 4, Girard 2
MINERAL RIDGE -- Jami Goodman had a single and a double for the Rams (1-0).
The Indians (1-1) scored in the second and seventh innings.
Champion 7, Lakeview 1
CORTLAND -- Kasey Karr (1-0) of Champion limited Lakeview to a double and single to pick up the win in the Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Jessica Carpenter and Emily Hayes each hit two-run singles as the Golden Flashes scored five runs in the top of the second inning.
Michelle Antonelli hit a double for the Bulldogs (1-1).
Hubbard 6, LaBrae 1
HUBBARD -- The Eagles' Kelly Hudy hit a home run and single and drove in two runs in the TAC opener for both schools.
East Palestine 7, Leetonia 1
EAST PALESTINE -- Freshman pitcher Chelsea Peterson won her first game for the Bulldogs (1-1, 1-0 Tri-County League).
Jessi Berresford's two hits included a RBI triple. Ashley Ehrenberg doubled.
Leetonia is 0-2, 0-1.
