Panezich triumphs -- times two



The Springfield junior swept the throwing events at two invitationals.
EAST PALESTINE -- Springfield junior Nick Panezich, a two-time state qualifier, won the shot put and the discus as the Tigers tied Boardman for 12th at Saturday's Ward Invitational.
Later in the day, Panezich won both events at the Division III Invitational at Western Reserve High School.
GlenOak's Brian Hartline won three individual events and anchored a first place relay to lead the Golden Eagles to the Ward team title with 103 points. Massillon Perry was second with 67 and Warren Harding was third with 46.
Harding's 4x100-meter relay of Benja'lyn Prott, Darren Lee, Jay Provitt and Richard Davis placed first in the 4x100 relay.
Howland's Vinny Freedman (1600) and Wellsville's Jason Carter (long jump) also won individual titles.
Western Reserve Invitational
BERLIN CENTER -- Panezich was named MVP of the throwing events after setting stadium records in both events. Panezich, a junior, threw 58-feet, 1-inch in the shot put (58-1) and 163-10 in the discus.
Brandon Battee of Warren JFK placed second in the 110 high hurdles (17.0) and was fifth in the 300 intermediate hurdles (45.4) to earn hurdles MVP, leading the Eagles to first place with 84 points.
Warren JFK's Shane Golden and Adam Lesko of Gilmour Academy tied for sprint MVP honors. Golden took first place in the 100 meters (11.3) and placed second in the 200 (23.8).
Lesko was first in the 200 (23.8) and second in the 100 (11.6) as Gilmour Academy placed third.
Mike Dickson of McDonald took first place in the 300 hurdles (45.5). The Blue Devils, who finished second, won the 4x800 (8:47.1) and 4x400 (3:40) relays.
East Canton's Matt Orwick won the 800 (2:04) and the 1600 and was named distance MVP.
Greg Dominic of Mineral Ridge and Jeff Budzowski of Independence shared MVP honors for the jumps. Dominic took first place in the long jump (21-2 1/2) and Budzowski won the high jump (5-10).
Girls
BERLIN CENTER -- Western Reserve's Emily Johnson placed first in the 100 (13.3), 200 (28.2) and 400 (1:03.8) to earn the sprint MVP, leading the Blue Devils to the team title ahead of Warren JFK, 81-75.
Waterloo was third with 71 1/2 points in the field of 17 schools.
Western Reserve's Amanda Barbone won the shot put (37-8 3/4) and the discus (115-4) to earn the throwing MVP award.
South Range's Andra Sanders was given the MVP award for the distance races, placing first in the 1600 (5:27.1) and the 3200 (11:59.3).
Mathews junior Tara Ford of Mathews was the jump MVP after winning the high jump (5-2) and the long jump (16-7).
Lowellville's Rachel Mariotti was give the hurdles MVP, winning the 100 (17.4) and placing second in the 300 (51.7).
Warren JFK's Angeline Cicero won the 300 hurdles (49.9).
