Local boxers competein Golden Gloves event
CLEVELAND -- Former Youngstown and Cleveland Golden Glove champion Reggie Revere is fairly new as a boxing trainer, but Friday night in Cleveland Golden Gloves action, two of his fighters advanced to the championship finals.
From Revere's Boxing Academy stable, sub-novice 178-pounder Derrick Eggleston stopped his opponent in the first round and open 165-pounder Nate Adams won a four-round decision.
Both Adams and Eggleston are from Warren.
Adams used a blistering attack with clever boxing to gain a four-round decision over Rasheen Wright of the Empire Boxing Club in Cleveland. Adams continually worked combinations off of a constantly moving left jab as he befuddled the veteran Wright.
Eggleston, a 17-year-old sub-novice 175-pounder, hurt Russell Nottingham from the Akron Rubber City Boxing Club with a vicious right to the body early in round one. Then, using a double right uppercut to the body and jaw, he dropped Nottingham, and the referee stopped the contest with 30 seconds left in the first round.
Josh Harris, fighting in a 178-pound open bout for Frank West's Buckeye Elks, lost a four-round decision to Omari Blaxton, an unattached boxer who fights out of the Mickey Bey Gym in Cleveland.
Thursday night in an open super-heavyweight battle, Gabriel Carrasquillo from the Johnny Kilbane Gym in Cleveland won a four-round decision over Orin Timmons from the Frank West Buckeye Elks.
Returning champion Zack Page from Warren won with a first-round knockout Thursday night.
Two Jack Loew Southside Boxing Club fighters, 119-pound novice Charlie Fagan and 132-pound novice Chris Hazimihalis, were unopposed to the finals, and both were in action Saturday night fighting for titles.
