HIGH SCHOOLS Howland baseball team takes two from Struthers



STRUTHERS -- The Howland High baseball team won a pair of 5-4 victories over Struthers in a Metro Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at Cene Park.
The first contest, postponed by bad weather at Howland earlier in the week, was won by the Tigers when they scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
In the second contest, Howland (2-0) fell behind 4-3 when Struthers (0-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Howland bounced back with a two-run rally in the top of the sixth.
Jimmy Farris paced the Wildcats with a double.
Softball
COLUMBIANA -- Jackson-Milton catcher Kay Bruss went seven-for-seven with four RBIs Saturday to lead the Bluejays to a doubleheader sweep of Columbiana.
In the opener, Krista Kiraly tossed a four-hitter and struck out five batters as Jackson-Milton won, 5-4.
Bruss' four hits included a two-run double. Rhea Weimer's three hits included a two-run double.
For the Clippers, Stacie Cross had two hits and Stephanie Barnes doubled. In the nightcap, Bruss' three hits included a pair of doubles and brought home two runs as the Bluejays (3-0) won, 4-3. Weimer's two hits included a two-run double.
Kiraly preserved the win by inducing a groundball out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. For Columbiana (0-2), Kristina Davidson and Tierney Steiginga had two hits apiece.
