GEM OF THE YEAR Florence Wang honored by Medical Society Alliance



The award recognizes exceptional volunteer service.
CANFIELD -- Florence Wang was honored as Gem of the Year by the Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance during its annual international dinner March 26 at Tippecanoe Country Club. The award is presented to a member of the Alliance who has performed outstanding service to the community.The event was a combined meeting of the Alliance and Mahoning County Medical Society.
Mrs. Wang has served on the executive boards of trustees, boards of directors and as president of numerous community organizations including PTA, Campfire Girls, Ballet Western Reserve, Friends of Ballet, Leadership Mahoning Valley, International Institute Foundation, International Students Advisory Boards of Youngstown State University, Organization of Civica y Cultural Hispana Americana, Friends of American Art, Youngstown Symphony Guild and Youngstown Symphony Society, YWCA, Tippecanoe Women's Organization, American Red Cross and its Field Services for the state of Ohio and the Alliance.

Five years ago, she started the annual Red and White Ball for the American Red Cross. And she has been chairwoman of the "American Holiday at the Butler" at The Butler Institute of American Art for six years.
Mrs. Wang has received the YWCA Woman of the Year Award, Youngstown Federation of Women's Clubs Community Service Award, American Red Cross five years of service award, the Ohio Association of Community Leadership Award and an award from the Red Cross Society of China.
She also has promoted a sister-city arrangement with the Red Cross in China and Youngstown that has resulted in visiting delegations between the two. Mrs. Wang also has been active in Chinese cultural programs at YSU and most recently participated in a recruitment program with YSU to encourage students in Taiwan to study at YSU.
Mrs. Wang, who is a gourmet cook, has taught and demonstrated Chinese gourmet dishes for clubs and organizations. She also won the Top Chef award in a Celebrity Chef Contest.
She and her husband, Dr. Hai Shui Wang, an ophthalmologist, have four daughters. They reside in Canfield.
