FEDERAL/MAC Spartans deafeat Hoover in 10th



Michelle High's 11th-inning grounder scored the winning run as Struthers nipped Niles.
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman High softball team scored the only run in its Federal League opener in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday as the Spartans defeated North Canton Hoover, 1-0.
With one away, Mallory Hay singled and moved to second on Danielle Burin's sacrifice bunt.
Krysta Sylvester hit an infield single and Hay scored when the Hoover second baseman threw wild to first base.
Ashley DiDomenico (1-0) pitched a complete game for the Spartans and struck out four batters.
Carla Pitman of North Canton Hoover (4-1) also pitched a complete game and struck out 10.
Poland 12, Canfield 1
POLAND -- Mallory Conger struck out five batters and limited the Cardinals to four hits.
She also hit two singles and scored twice for the Bulldogs (2-0, 2-0 Metro Athletic Conference).
Krista Ginnetti also had two singles and scored twice while Kari Thompson brought home two runners.
Poland made the most of eight walks.
For Canfield (1-1, 1-1), Nikki Garrett doubled and Whitney Zunic tripled her home.
Struthers 1, Niles 0
NILES -- Using the international tiebreaking rule, Nicole McGuire opened the top of the 11th inning on second base.
McGuire went to third on a sacrifice by Allison Ginnetti and a ground ball by Michelle High brought the run home.
Holly Hickenbottom had a single and a double for the Wildcats (1-1, 1-1 MAC).
Stacia Ray doubled for Niles (0-2, 0-2).
Salem 3, Beaver Local 1
SALEM -- Brittany Gregory tossed a one-hitter, tripled home a run and scored the game-winning run on Rita Liggitt's single for the Quakers (1-1).
Stephanie Szabat and Amanda Yeager each had two hits for Salem.
The Beavers are 0-2.
