Events aim to raise awareness of sexual assault



MERCER, Pa. -- April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and AWARE is offering a variety of group support and education programs on related subjects.
Persons interested in attending any of the programs should contact Gillian Maule at (724) 662-1870 to register and get specific meeting times.
Alternatives for Women: Advocacy, Resources and Education offers support groups for victims of sexual violence. The schedule for the month has groups meeting Monday at the UPMC Horizon Womancare Center in Hermitage, April 12 at UPMC Horizon in Farrell and April 15 at Bethany Church in Mercer.
The agency is also launching a weekly education and support group series about the dynamics of domestic violence.
Its first meeting is set for Monday at East Side Church Baptist-Disciple of Christ in Sharon.
AWARE is also starting Sister to Sister, a peer support group for battered or formerly battered women. That group will meet Tuesday at Bethany Church in Mercer, Wednesday at the Womancare Center in Hermitage and April 14 at UPMC Horizon in Farrell.
Finally, AWARE is starting a peer support group for adult survivors of incest. It will meet Wednesday at East Side Church in Sharon.
