Eat some bacteria for better health

KNIGHT RIDDER
Are you hungry for the latest food fad? Try a little bacteria.
That's what the industry is hoping will hit big this year, The Wall Street Journal says. The dairy and beverage companies are marketing products with "probiotics," or strains of bacteria that are said to promote better health.
The claims range from better digestion to a boost in the immune system. They're surfacing in cereals, smoothies, energy bars and other foods. The Journal says 15 new foods and supplements with probiotics were introduced in 2003, up 10 from the year before.
Dannon's DanActive has been shipping to supermarkets in recent weeks. Already a hit in Europe, it is said to contain 10 times more "beneficial bacteria" than yogurt.
Will it make you healthier? Scientists have studied some medical benefits in probiotics for treating certain illnesses, but no one can prove they will keep you from getting a cold.
