SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Celebrate Earth Week by pitching in at the park at Jennings Environmental Education Center's Spring Into Action day from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 24.
Interested groups and individuals are needed to help with park improvement projects during this annual event.
Lunch will be provided, and each participant will receive a T-shirt commemorating the event.
A raffle will also be held, giving volunteers the opportunity to win outdoor-related prizes.
Participants must be age 12 or older and register for the program by contacting the center at (724) 794-6011 no later than April 16.
Apartment residents escape fire that kills cat
YOUNGSTOWN -- All the residents at 410 Circle Apt. C managed to escape a Saturday morning fire. Firefighters responded to the fire at the apartment at 9:54 a.m.
Firefighters said a couch in the living room of the apartment caught fire.
No one was injured, but a cat was killed in the fire.
Firefighters said a dog that was inside the residence was saved.
Damage was estimated at $7,500.
Man taken to jailhad drugs, police say
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Crandall Avenue man is accused by police of trying to smuggle suspected marijuana and crack cocaine into the Mahoning County Jail.
Michael McMillan, 30, is charged with illegal conveyance of contraband into a detention facility, felony trafficking in marijuana, felony trafficking in crack cocaine and driving under suspension.
Police said McMillan was driving a car they stopped at about 7 p.m. Friday on Harlem Street for not having a rear license plate light.
When police asked McMillan for his license, he gave them a state identification card, reports state. He told police his license was suspended.
Police said they searched the car's trunk and found 13 plastic bags containing suspected marijuana.
McMillan was taken to the county jail. At the jail, police asked McMillan twice if he was carrying contraband. He replied no. Police said they searched his pockets and found 11 plastic bags of suspected crack cocaine and three bags of suspected marijuana.
Gingrich to speakat charity fund-raiser
MINERAL RIDGE -- Marianne Gingrich is returning to the Youngstown area as part of a fund-raiser for Who's Who Inc., a charity that benefits low-income families, the elderly and the homeless.
The former wife of Newt Gingrich, who was Speaker of the House, she is a guest speaker at the Who's Who Annual Banquet scheduled for April 17 at Theodore's Banquet Center, 1400 N. Canfield-Niles Road.
Gingrich grew up in Leetonia and graduated from Leetonia High School. She attended college at both Kent State and Georgia State universities.
She is on the board of directors of the American Red Cross for Northwest Metro Atlanta, has been involved with the Children's Inn at the National Institute of Health and has worked at the Institute for Advanced Strategic and Political Studies.
Gingrich is a Republican activist. She has participated in the Republican Women's Federal Forum, served as vice president of the Republican Congressional Spouses, and helped manage the 1988 and 1990 political campaigns of her then-husband.

Sheridan Crime Watchto meet April 12
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Sheridan Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. April 12 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church at Clearmount and Hudson avenues.
The speaker will be Police Chief Robert Bush Jr., who has announced he will run for the Democratic nomination for mayor in the 2005 primary.
Easter party for kidsat Lepper Library
LISBON -- The Lepper Library, 303 E. Lincoln Way, will have an Easter party and spring sing-a-long at 4 p.m. Wednesday for children of all ages.
The program will include stories, music, games, prizes and refreshments.
Temporary closingof state Route 45
ELLSWORTH -- State Route 45 between U.S. Route 224 and Berlin Station Road will be closed April 12-24 for a bridge replacement.
The official detour will be over state Routes 165, 14 and 534 to U.S. Route 224, the Ohio Department of Transportation said.
