Warren chief findscop's shots were OK
WARREN -- Patrol Officer Michael Albanese acted properly when he shot at a vehicle March 23, based on findings from an internal investigation, said Police Chief John Mandopoulos.
The chief said this morning that the vehicle contained two men wanted on charges of rape and burglary. No one was injured by the officer's shot, the chief said. Albanese and another officer were trying to stop the men, who they believed had burglarized homes on Westwood Street Northwest and Parkman Road Northwest. A woman at the Parkman Road home told police that one of the men had raped her.
Joel Davis, 20, of Burton Street Southeast and Allen L. Elkins IV, 19, of Haymaker Avenue Northeast were indicted Monday on charges of aggravated burglary, kidnapping and rape. They are scheduled to appear in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday.
2 school chiefs vieto head Hubbard
HUBBARD -- Two school district superintendents are vying to become superintendent of Hubbard schools.
Richard Buchenic, Lowellville superintendent and former Hubbard High School principal, and Kenneth Halbert, head of the Bloomfield-Mesopotamia district, have gone through an informal screening process before the school board.
The position opened when James J. Herrholtz resigned effective March 15 to become superintendent of the Madison Local School District.
Robert Toth, board of education president, said others were solicited to interview with the board, but they were not interested when contacted.
Interim Superintendent Lucille Esposito said she is not a candidate because of her interest in curriculum with the district rather than administration.
Jacobs Road attack
HUBBARD -- A township woman was attacked Thursday night after getting out of her car at her Jacobs Road home.
Detective Mike Begeot said the woman, in her mid-60s, got out of the car after pulling into the driveway shortly after 9 p.m. She was confronted by a man who knocked her to the ground before he fled. He took nothing, and she was treated at the scene by paramedics.
Begeot asked residents to be aware of their surroundings to prevent similar situations.
Clean roads partner
COLUMBUS -- Trumbull is among the seven Ohio counties that have committed to keep Ohio's roadways clean, reinvigorating the state Adopt-A-Roadway Program, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Allen, Delaware, Jefferson, Lorain, Marion, Ross and Trumbull counties have joined in an Adopt-A-Roadway partnership with the state, along with the Ohio Township Association and the County Commissioners' Association of Ohio.
The Adopt-A-Roadway Program is part of the ODNR award-winning "Plant Pride, Not Litter" education and awareness initiative. Volunteers adopt two-mile stretches of roadway in their county, which means they commit to cleaning it twice a year for two years. The stretches are marked at the beginning and end with a sign.
"This reinvigoration of the Adopt-A-Roadway Program is happening at a very critical time," said Ron Kolbash, chief of the ODNR Division of Recycling & amp; Litter Prevention. "Local governments might not have the financial resources to clean up litter, and volunteer programs are essential during these difficult times."
The counties work with local solid waste districts and recycling program representatives to identify roadways to be adopted and recruit volunteer groups. Those wishing to volunteer in the program should contact their local recycling and litter prevention office.
Break-in reported
NILES -- A North Road man told police he saw someone break into his neighbor's apartment.
According to reports, the man said he was looking out the window and saw a man wearing a black stocking cap, black leather jacket, khaki pants and work boots running away from the apartment complex around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.
The woman who lives in the apartment, in the 1200 block of North Road, told police she and her boyfriend had left the residence just minutes before the neighbor called police.
The rear window was broken out, and the woman reported the bedroom was ransacked and $500 in cash and a CD player valued at $150 were taken.
DUI enforcement
NILES -- Throughout April the city police department will increase the number of patrols to target drunken and impaired drivers.
With use of state funds provided through the Trumbull County DUI Task Force, extra officers will be on the roads at various times.
