Winners of PSA contest
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 27 First News Caring for Our Community campaign recently named winners of its annual public service announcement contest. Each wins a $100 savings bond and will be featured in ads on WKBN-TV 27 this month.
The top entry was from Lauren Perica, a senior at Poland Seminary High School, who also received a $1,000 scholarship. Her entry featured the Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County, Pa.
Runners-up were: Douglas Brown, senior at Laurel High School, the Salvation Army; Rachel I. Hanni, senior at Chaney High School, the Salvation Army; Perry Servedio, senior at Laurel High School, the Pine Township Engine Co.; Dana Rae Beckwith, senior at Laurel High School, the Mahoning County District Board of Health; and Kelly A. Peoples, junior at Howland High School, the Volunteer Services Agency.

Informational summit
YOUNGSTOWN -- An informational summit for community partners of the Youngstown city school district will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 8 at the Irene L. Ward Building, 20 W. Wood St.

Seeking host families
The Pacific Intercultural Exchange is looking for Mahoning Valley families to host English-speaking foreign high school students who will arrive soon for academic semester programs and will attend local high schools.
Students come from Mexico, Eastern and Western Europe, South America, Australia, Africa and Asia. They carry accident and health insurance and have their own spending money.

ARRID Total Women
The Smithsonian-affiliate Women's Museum and ARRID Total antiperspirant and deodorant seek nominations of high school junior and senior girls for the ARRID Total Women of Tomorrow Scholarship, based on goals, pioneering spirit and community stewardship.
Three winners will receive a total of $18,000 and be featured on collectible cards featuring Total Women of Yesterday and Today. Applying for state grants
Pennsylvania students seeking state higher education assistance grants for the 2004-05 school year have until May 1 to apply. State grants are provided through the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency and application information is available by contacting the agency on its Web site at www.pheaa.org. Students can get up to $3,300 aid at Pennsylvania schools and up to $600 at out-of-state schools.
Essay competition
Pupils in grades 7-12 are invited to participate in the 2004 Italian American Veterans National Essay Contest. Prizes are cash awards at the post, state and national levels. Entries must be submitted by May 8.

Lecture at Kent State
KENT -- Dr. Jeffrey Wallin, president of the American Academy for Liberal Education, presents "The Importance of Liberal Education in an Age of Specialization" at 7 p.m. April 14 at the Student Center Ballroom Balcony at Kent State University. Annual equity conference
The American Association of University Women's ninth annual equity conference and 80th annual meeting and convention will be April 30 to May 1 at King's Island Resort in Cincinnati. This year's conference theme is & quot;Barriers to Equity: The Intersections of Race, Gender and Class. & quot; Invited are business, education and nonprofit organizations and grant writing workshops will be offered.

Facilities conference set
COLUMBUS -- A School Facilities Conference will be held May 11 and 13 at the Hilton at Easton Town Center. The Buckeye Association of School Administrators, TRIAD Architects, KnowledgeWorks Foundation, the Ohio School Facilities Commission and Bricker & amp; Eckler LLP sponsor the event, which is open to school representatives, community members and facilities professionals.

Chocolate Festival funds
ROOTSTOWN -- The Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine's Chocolate Festival, sponsored by the College's Health Promotion Committee, recently raised more than $800 for local programs that serve victims of domestic violence.
Proceeds will be divided among the Hope House Visitation Center in Youngstown; Developing Options for Violent Emergencies in Akron; and Safer Futures in Kent.
Donations from the event came from various sources, including Helmut Mayer, general manager of the Ralph Regula Conference Center; the NEOUCOM Conference Services staff; Kim Hollingshead, NEOUCOM Office of Accounting; Jeanette Killius, NEOUCOM Department of Microbiology; the NEOUCOM Bookstore; Hartville Chocolate Factory; Harry London Candies; and Malley's Chocolates.
