PENNSYLVANIA Occupants escape house blaze caused by child playing with fire

FARRELL, Pa.-- A child playing with a cigarette lighter was listed as the cause of a blaze in a home at 620 French St.
Fire Chief Joseph Santell said the call came in at 3:53 a.m. today. Six occupants of the two-story frame house got out safely, he said.
The fire was started in a second-floor bedroom by a 4-year-old child who set fire to a sheet on the bed. The fire spread to the bedding and some clothing on the floor but firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, Santell said.
The house, however, did have smoke damage and the occupants were unable to spend the rest of the night there, he said, noting that the American Red Cross was called in to assist them.
Santell said the house is rented by Nihdja Gash. She and another woman and four children between the ages of 3 and 8 were in the home, he said.
