The Marlins, who open the season Tuesday at home against Montreal, lost for the third time in four games. Albuquerque shortstop Wilson Valdez stole four bases in the first two innings and had two singles, a double and scored twice. Carl Pavano, the No. 4 starter in the Marlins' rotation, was scheduled to start but felt some tightness in his back and didn't pitch.

Montreal starter Zach Day allowed just one hit and one unearned run in seven innings. Brian Schneider went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs to lift the Expos.
