EAST LIVERPOOL -- A portion of state Route 11 is closed today because of mudslides in the Dresden Avenue area.
City police said mudslides began about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, sending mud, rocks and uprooted trees down the hillside. No injuries were reported.
Route 11 is closed at the Calcutta exit and traffic is detoured onto Dresden Avenue to the Eighth Street entrance to Route 11.
Habitat for Humanityto dedicate 11th home
YOUNGSTOWN -- Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning County, a faith-based organization that builds homes for low-income people, will dedicate its 11th new home in the Mahoning Valley on Tuesday at the intersection of Bruno and Oregon Streets on the city's West Side.
The Habitat partner/owner, the Joy Rios family, will receive the deed to the property and keys to their new home during a ceremony at 10 a.m., said William Farragher, Habitat spokesman.
Executives of FirstEnergy Corp., sponsor for the home, will attend, along with building materials suppliers and representatives of the Trade Union Apprentice Programs who participated in the project.
2 school chiefs vieto head Hubbard
HUBBARD -- Two school district superintendents are vying to become superintendent of Hubbard schools.
Richard Buchenic, Lowellville superintendent and former Hubbard High School principal, and Kenneth Halbert, head of the Bloomfield-Mesopotamia district, have gone through an informal screening process before the school board. Halbert has also applied to be superintendent of schools in the city of Columbiana.
The position opened when James J. Herrholtz resigned effective March 15 to become superintendent of the Madison Local School District.
Robert Toth, board of education president, said others were solicited to interview with the board, but they were not interested when contacted.
Interim Superintendent Lucille Esposito said she is not a candidate because of her interest in curriculum with the district rather than administration.
Pot found in teen's room
BOARDMAN -- A 15-year-old Boardman High School student faces a minor misdemeanor charge of cultivating marijuana after police found marijuana plants in his bedroom.
The teen, of Arlene Avenue, was arrested at the township police department Thursday, police reports show. Police Capt. Jack Nichols said the boy had gotten into trouble at school last month and administrators found a videotape in his possession. When they watched the tape, they saw the teen in his bedroom, with about a half dozen plants, Nichols said.
Besides the cultivating charge, the boy faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Spitting complaint
BOARDMAN -- Township police are investigating a complaint that the mother of a pupil spat on the principal at Glenwood Middle School on Wednesday.
Boardman Capt. Jack Nichols said it appears the principal and the woman were arguing about an issue involving the pupil when the assault is said to have occurred.
Items stolen from mail
BOARDMAN -- A 58-year-old Silver Fox Drive woman has reported to police that several mail-order items were stolen from her mailbox sometime between March 21 and Thursday.
Missing are two watches valued at $200 and $500 and a Chinese coin valued at $170, police reports show.
Open house on campus
SHARON, Pa. -- Penn State Shenango will hold an adult open house from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in Sharon Hall Room 105.
Prospective students are invited to join staff, faculty and students for a "Day of Discovery" in which they will be able to complete an admission application, obtain financial aid information and tour the campus.

Jacobs Road attack
HUBBARD -- A township woman was attacked Thursday night after getting out of her car at her Jacobs Road home.
Detective Mike Begeot said the woman, in her mid-60s, got out of the car after pulling into the driveway shortly after 9 p.m. She was confronted by a man who knocked her to the ground before he fled. He took nothing, and she was treated at the scene by paramedics.
Begeot asked residents to be aware of their surroundings to prevent similar situations.
