Health care program
NILES -- Edward Maurer, director of the Veterans Affairs Belmont Outpatient Clinic in Youngstown, will present a program, "Your Veterans Administration Health Care," at 7 p.m. April 19 at American Legion William McKinley Post 106, Main and Margaret streets.
Dinner is a 6:30 p.m. The cost is $5, and all veterans are welcome. Call (330) 652-2347.
RETIRED
Ending service in Navy
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Jesse E. Smith Sr., whose wife, Catherine, is the daughter of Mary Anne and Joseph Gagliardi of Sharon, Pa., has retired after 20 years of service. His last assignment was as lead torpedomate aboard the frigate USS McInerney.
During his career, Smith served in various sea and shore billets, including the Quality Assurance Division at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla.; torpedoman aboard the frigate USS Aubrey Fitch; and Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Va.
He also received several personal awards, campaign ribbons and medals, including five Navy Achievement Medals, a Navy and Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendations.

Moving up in ranks
Air Force 2nd Lt. Gary E. Roos was promoted to his present rank upon graduating from the 12-week Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. Roos is a project engineer assigned to the Air Logistics Center, Hill Air Force Base, Ogden, Utah.
He is the son of Edward R. and Madeline J. Roos of Hermitage, Pa., where he graduated in 1998 from Hickory High School.
He also received a bachelor's degree in 2002 from the University of Pittsburgh.

USS George Washington
Some area residents are aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, part of the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group, which was deployed to the Arabian Sea. They include:
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Andrew R. Mull, son of Lauraetta L. and William M. Mull of Berlin Center, and a 1989 graduate of Western Reserve High School; Airman David B. Norris Jr., son of Valerie Sue Wright of New Brighton, Pa., and David B. Norris Sr. of Ellwood City, Pa.; Airman Allicia A. Price, stepdaughter of Jessica L. and William E. Price Jr. of New Castle, Pa., and a 2003 graduate of Lawrence County Vocational Technical High School, New Castle.

Navy Hospitalman Apprentice Adam C. English, son of Karen J. English of Cortland, and Lewis C. English of Warren, recently graduated from the 14-week Basic Hospital Corps School at Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Ill.
English is a 1996 graduate of Lakeview High School, Cortland.
