Notre Dame School in Warren will move fourth, fifth grades

WARREN -- Notre Dame School plans to close its fourth- and fifth-grade campus at St. James Parish and move those grades to the downtown Queen of Peace middle school building.
About 112 pupils attend class at the campus, called Queen of Angels, in a school at 2106 Arbor Ave. S.E. rented from St. James, said Youngstown Diocese Superintendent Michael Skube.
The classes will be moved to the first floor of the middle school, formerly called St. Mary's, in August.
"We did a facility study and it was determined we didn't need as much space as we are using," Skube said.
Closing the campus was the simplest solution, he said.
Notre Dame School operates two prekindergarten-to-third-grade campuses as well as the middle school.
The teachers, principal and secretary at Notre Dame School Queen of Angels work for the diocese, while janitorial and support staff work for St. James.
St. James might use the building for any manner of community activities, Skube said.
Notre Dame School has been facing a decline in enrollment, as have public schools, he said.
Notre Dame will reduce its staff across all buildings for next school year, he said.
