Michaelis qualifiesfor NCAA regional
RALEIGH, N.C. -- senior Kurt Michealis qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday at the Raleigh Relays.
Michealis' qualifying time of 9 minutes, 6.57 seconds was good for fourth place overall in the race and third place among collegiate runners. His time is the seventh-fastest in the nation this season, according to YSU coach Brian Gorby.
Sophomore Aaliyah Gillespie paced the women's squad as she set a school record in the 100 hurdles with a 20th-place time of 14.53.
Lisa Davies turned in a fifth-place time of 36:38.23 in the 10,000 while Lindsay Wojciak finished 19th in the 5,000 (18:39.14). Danielle Bolt finished 22nd in the 60 (12.12) and Laura Schatz was 15th in the high jump (5 feet, 4 1/2 inches).
Also for the men, Chris Hine was 13th in the 5,000 (15:32.03), Tony Orcena was 29th in the 10,000 (32:11.30), Derek Riker was 19th in the pole vault (15-1), Dave Mealy was 11th in the unseeded 10,000 (32:55.77) and Nick Kruse was 22nd in the unseeded 3,000 steeplechase (10:13.61).

Carchedi to playfor Westminster
LOWELLVILLE -- Steve Carchedi, a four-year starter for Lowellville High School, will play football at Westminster.
Carchedi, who ranks eighth in a class of 50, played guard for four years. He was an outside linebacker as a freshman, then a defensive end for the last three years.
The son of Jean Carchedi of Lowellville and Jim Carchedi of Struthers made first-team All-Ohio and first-team All-NEO as a senior. He was also first-team All-ICL for three seasons.
Carchedi played for coach John Protopapa his first three years, then under Cliff Jamieson as a senior.
Eargle chosenfor all-star game
COLUMBUS -- Austintown Fitch High senior Terrell Eargle, an all-state guard for the Falcons, will play in the Division I-II North-South All-Star Classic at 4:30 p.m. on April 18 at Capital University.
Division III-IV boys will play at 3 p.m. Girls Div. III-IV play at noon, followed by I-II girls at 1:30.
Jessica Smithwins weight class
AUSTINTOWN -- Jessica Smith, a sixth-grader at Austintown Middle School, took first place in her weight class of the United States Girls Wrestling Association national tournament.
Smith won the heavyweight division (155 pounds and over) at the tournament, held at Lake Orion High in Pontiac, Mich. She qualified for the meet by placing first at the state tournament in Mount Vernon.
Packard golf meeting
WARREN -- The Packard Electric Ladies Golf League will hold its opening meeting April 19 at G's Goloden Gate Restaurant at 6 p.m.
Charter members and any new members are urged to attend. Rulebooks, that include schedule of events, will be available. Members do not have to be Delphi employees to join.

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- Playing her third match following an eight-month layoff, Serena Williams overpowered 16-year-old Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the Nasdaq-100 Open.
Calvin Murphyarrested
HOUSTON -- Hall of Fame guard Calvin Murphy surrendered to authorities after being charged with sexually abusing his daughters more than a decade ago.
The former Houston Rockets star was charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault and three counts of indecency with a child.
Daly qualifiesfor Masters
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- John Daly will get another crack at Augusta National.
Daly, who earned his first PGA Tour victory in nine years last month at Torrey Pines, was among the final five players who qualified for the Masters by finishing in the top 10 on the money list or the top 50 in the world ranking.
Daly dropped only one spot to No. 10 on the money list.
He was only safe when Adam Scott won The Players Championship, and none of the players behind Daly on the money list finished second.
