Thorntonfood Market to close

SHARON, Pa. -- Thorntonfood Market Inc., a fixture at the corner of Thornton Street and Hall Avenue for at least 40 years, is closing by the end of April.
Paul Aszalos, store manager, confirmed the closing this morning, saying that tough competition from larger grocery store chains was a key factor. "It's tough on the little guys," he said.
The store has been owned by his grandmother, Marian Aszalos of Hubbard, for about 30 years and was previously a Golden Dawn store.
Store employees began notifying customers of the impending closing this week.
Patrons of the store have recently been concerned about its ability to continue operating as items began to disappear from store shelves and some of the shelves weren't being restocked.
The store had been open seven days a week until Monday.
It won't be open Sunday anymore, and the Monday through Friday closing hour was moved from 9 p.m. to 5 p.m. The store will still open at 8:30 a.m.
