KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Wade Miller and Jason Stanford each accomplished his goal: Miller got his work in, and Stanford made his case.
Miller pitched six solid innings in his final Florida start to lead the Houston Astros past the Cleveland Indians 2-1 Monday night. The right-hander allowed one run and four hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Stanford threw five strong innings in his bid to become the Indians' fifth starter. Stanford, competing with Chad Durbin, might have wrapped up the job after another quality start. He escaped trouble in the second and third innings. Stanford allowed four hits, one earned run, struck out three and walked one.
Jose Vizcaino's single in the eighth inning broke a 1-1 tie.
Miller fell behind 1-0 in the first when Casey Blake hit his fifth homer. Coco Crisp lined a double to right field and Miller walked Stanford before escaping the inning on a groundout by Matt Lawton.
Reds 6, Pirates 2
SARASOTA, Fla. -- Ken Griffey Jr. strained his calf and left as a precaution.
Griffey hurt his right calf while running out a grounder in the first inning. He played center for one more inning, told a trainer the leg was sore, then jogged off the field for treatment.
Griffey, who departed before the clubhouse opened to reporters, was given a walking boot to wear overnight. He was to be evaluated again today.
Right-hander Todd Jones, trying to win a spot in the Reds' bullpen, left in the eighth after Tike Redman's liner glanced off his pitching arm just above the elbow.
Jones had some swelling and will be sidelined for at least one day.
Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong, competing with Rick Reed for the final spot in Pittsburgh's rotation, gave up two solo homers and struck out eight in six innings. He struck out Barry Larkin in each of his first three at-bats.
Wily Mo Pena and Adam Dunn homered off Vogelsong, who went six innings for the first time this spring.
