POLAND -- Township trustees have decided what will be done with community development funds received from the county.
Administrator James Scharville said the township will receive $82,008 from the county. Township officials said they were able to include two additional projects by saving money on one planned job.
The lion's share of the community development money is still dedicated to the Beechwood Stormwater Management Project in conjunction with Struthers.
The township and Struthers are each providing $36,580 to the project. The project's total cost is $236,000. The remainder of the money is coming from State Issue 2 funds.
Earlier plans
Trustees initially voted to use the remainder of the community development money -- $45,428 -- toward repaving the township hall parking lot. The price for that job was expected to be $60,000, which includes the use of recycled crumb rubber.
Scharville said trustees have decided to scrap plans to use recycled rubber in the paving project. Using asphalt, he said, was determined to be less expensive.
"The low-end cost to spread crumb rubber is about $100 a cubic yard. You can spread asphalt, which is just as good, for a high-end cost of $70 a cubic yard," he said. "We were going to use recycled products, but recycled products cost $30 a yard more and that made no sense."
Scharville said the estimated cost to pave the parking lot with asphalt is $18,000. An additional $5,000 will be spent on striping, he said.
Scharville said the parking lot needs to be repaved because the shifting soil, over time, has caused the parking lot to begin cracking.
Funding more
As a result of the additional savings on the parking lot project, Scharville said, township officials have been able fund two additional jobs.
Work will be done on Cliffview Drive and Diana Drive. Scharville said the township has a stormwater easement on Cliffview Drive that is eroding the road and could cause problems in the future for one area homeowner.
He said the plan is to eliminate any more erosion from the stormwater flow. The project will cost an estimated $14,750.
Scharville said trustees are also looking to eliminate a flooding problem in the Diana Drive/Pueblo Drive area. He said about 10 homes in the area experience flooding after a heavy rain and water has accumulated on the road. The project will cost an estimated $10,000.
Scharville said the township will use some general fund money to complete all the projects.
