Botanical name: Brassidium Fly Away "Miami"

Botanical name: Brassidium Fly Away "Miami"
Attributes: The Spider Orchid is one of the new cultivars in the Oncidium Alliance, featuring spidery-looking flowers that make it ideal for fall indoor decorating. This orchid has up to 30 bright yellow petals and sepals with black spots on a 3-foot-long arching spike. Vigorous growing plants bloom up to three times each year, with flowers lasting six to eight weeks.
Bloom time: Anytime during the year on mature growth
Culture: Purchase healthy, well budded and blooming plants. Place in bright light -- in an east or west window. Water when dry; typically about every five to seven days. Provide a little extra humidity by misting or placing on a humidity tray. Under cool conditions, flowers will last longer and have the best color. Remove spent blooms and break the spike when it has finished flowering. When new roots and shoots begin, fertilize weekly with an orchid food (20-10-20).
Landscape tips: Orchids are unbeatable for long-lasting color in the home. A decorative pot, some green moss and a bamboo stake will create a natural, living sculpture.
Cost: $35 to $85, depending on plant size and number of flowers. Found at local florists, nurseries and growers specializing in orchids.
