PHILADELPHIA St. Joe's trying to move on after loss

The Hawks will lose All-America senior guard Jameer Nelson.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- This was not the way Jameer Nelson wanted to end his career, sitting on the court staring blankly while another team wildly celebrated around him.
The eyes that had the Final Four in sight were instead filled with tears and rubbed raw.
Like it or not, missing the final shot of his career -- the shot that could have tied the regional final against Oklahoma State -- could be the lasting impression of perhaps the greatest Saint Joseph's player ever.
Now the Hawks (30-2) have to figure out how to return to the tournament without their All-America senior guard. It won't be easy for this tiny Jesuit school that became the talk of college basketball.
"I don't think you can really put into words what this guy has done," Hawks coach Phil Martelli said. "He's the greatest player I've ever been around."
Maybe Martelli can't find the words, a rarity for the quick-quipped coach, but the numbers tell the story of Nelson's impact on this storybook season.
Magical season
There were 27 straight wins to open the season, the first No. 1 ranking and first No. 1 NCAA tournament seed in team history, a 30-win season, a trip to the regional final for the first time since 1981, and the first All-America nod in team history.
The Hawks had everything but the national championship Martelli promised the crowd after their home finale.
"Everybody said this is a magical season," Nelson said. "I think it's a better team than the season we had."
There will be at least one more honor for Nelson, who will have his No. 14 retired at Saint Joe's season-ending banquet. The Hawks also will lose defensive stopper Tyrone Barley, who came up with clutch stops and sticky defense throughout the tournament.
Barley and Nelson, co-captains, won more games than any seniors in Saint Joe's history. They shared a hug and whispered some words to each other before heading to the locker room after their 64-62 loss to the Cowboys on Saturday.
"The leadership they have is just irreplaceable," said forward Pat Carroll. "We're going to do our best. We have some good young guys on this team. We're going to recover and work with what we have. We should have a pretty good team."
