YOUNGSTOWN -- More than 450 fight fans crowded into the Krakusy Hall to see 13 amateur fights Saturday night, sponsored by Jack Loew's Southside Boxing Club.
Only two of the bouts failed to go the distance, but it wasn't a good night for area boxers, especially the host club.
In five bouts involving area fighters against outside competition, only Chris Hazimihalis from Loew's stable was victorious as a pair of very unpopular decisions went against Juan Salinas and Charlie Fagan.
Overall, area boxers posted a 4-7 record for the show.
Salinas (13-4), a runner-up in the National Silver Gloves Tournament earlier this year, lost to Zeedie Adams from the Salvation Army Boxing Academy of Cleveland in a battle of 90-pound Junior Olympians. Salinas was effective as a counter puncher, but Adams' aggressiveness apparently swayed the judges.
Fagan lost in a 119-pound three-rounder to Myles Cook from Akron's Porter A.C. Fagan was the aggressor, but Cook showed good boxing ability.
The best bout
Hazimihalis, a 17-year-old from Campbell, went to 7-1 in his amateur career with an outstanding exhibition of offense and defense against Nelson Martinez of Cleveland's Johnny Kilbane Boxing Club, in what was the best bout of the evening.
It was a 132-pound, four-rounder packed with action and good exchanges, and the much-improved Hazimihalis worked Martinez around the ring with good combinations and finished every round strong.
Several times in the last two rounds, Hazimihalis' straight rights found the mark, and in the final round he had Martinez's face bloodied.
"This was my first fight since August and I worked hard to get in shape and I worked hard in the ring," said Hazimihalis.
Loss
Orin Timmons, a super-heavyweight trained by Frank West at the Buckeye Elks, lost a four-round decision to Cleveland's Jabir Bahair.
In a bout that matched two 165-pound fighters from the area, a very fast-punching Nate Adams from Reggie Revere's Boxing Academy win over Travis Kis from Tony Maiorana's McDonald A.C., when the referee stopped the bout in the first round.
Another McDonald A.C. fighter, Dillion Pullman, had an outstanding win. In a battle of 65-pound Junior Olympians, Pullman, with non-stop punching from the opening bell, easily won over Jose Rodroguez from Porter A.C.
In another 65-pound Junior Olympian bout with two area fighters, Antwan Baugh from P.C. Torres' Warren Boxing Association won a decision over Alejandro Salinas, Juan's younger brother.
Non-area bouts
The show also had some entertaining battles between boxers from visiting stables. One of these was a 152-pound war between Shawn Porter from Porter A.C. and Cleveland's Delany Howard. Porter, a five time Junior Olympic National Champion, won a hard fought decision.
In a 140-pound contest between two Cleveland fighters, two-time national champion Dante Moore won a decision over Andre Hines in a very hard fought and close bout.
"It was a great turnout for a lot of good fights which is proof again that people in this area have a love for good boxing," said Loew.
