Senior quarterback Ault keys Mineral Ridge to fifth straight triumph



Chris Ault's passing attack powered the Rams to a 28-0 blanking of J-M.
MINERAL RIDGE -- Senior quarterback Chris Ault passed for two touchdowns and ran for another score, as the Mineral Ridge High football team won its fifth straight game with a 28-0 triumph over Jackson-Milton Friday in an Inter-County League game.
The Rams (5-1, 3-0 ICL), who lost their season opener to Leetonia, compiled 332 total yards with Ault passing for 139 on 10-for-18 to sink the Bluejays.
Ault's main targets were senior wide receivers Steve Velte, who had five catches for 62 yards, and Brandon Linert with two receptions for 40 yards.
Velte caught Ridge's first touchdown pass from Ault from 16 yards out.
Greg Dominic's 14-yard TD reception from Ault and Brian Palmer's second PAT put the Rams up, 14-0.
Levi Leigh's 1-yard touchdown run and Ault's TD scamper from 3 yards out completed the scoring. Palmer finished with four PATs.
Reinforcement
Leigh, a junior running back, had 91 yards on 14 carries, while Micah Hall, a sophomore who alternates in the spread offense backfield, added 77 yards on 13 carries.
Ridge's rushing total was 193.
Leigh recovered a fumble which led to his own touchdown, while an interception by Brad Ward, a junior cornerback, helped set up the Rams' fourth tally.
Jackson-Milton (2-4, 1-2) managed 127 total yards with senior quarterback Zack Nicholas completing six of 11 passes for 82 yards.
South Range 34, Mathews 3
VIENNA -- South Range's all-Matt team of Matt McGarvey, Matt Slater and Matt Novak got into the scoring act once, but Ben Johnston did it twice.
Johnston scored from 5 and 10 yards out, while senior quarterback Ryan Maxwell passed to McGarvey from 13 yards out for another touchdown, as South Range (6-0, 3-0) registered all of its points before Paul Belany put Mathews on the board with 5:43 remaining.
Range out-gained the Mustangs (2-4, 0-3), 449-168.
Johnston, a junior tailback, had 109 of the Raiders' 359 rushing yards on 10 carries.
Slater sparkles
Slater, a sophomore tailback who had a 65-yard TD run, tacked on 101 yards on five attempts. Novak's tally from 18 yards out put the Raiders ahead, 27-0.
Tony Darkadakis's conversion run and Patrick Majernik's two PATS accounted for the winners' remaining points.
McGarvey, a senior wide receiver, had three catches for 44 yards, while Maxwell completed six of 12 passes for 90 yards. Maxwell was intercepted once.
For Mathews, junior quarterback Mike Cerbus had 22 carries for 50 yards and sophomore tailback Nick Ocheltree had 42 yards on four carries. Belany's field goal was from 29 yards out.
The Mustangs had 41 rushing attempts for 137 yards.
