AROUND THE HORN | Friday's other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Yankees 11, Orioles 2Orioles 3, Yankees 2, 10 innings
NEW YORK -- Yankees rookie Jorge De Paula took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his first major league start, but New York was denied its 100th win as Baltimore rallied for a victory in 10 innings and a doubleheader split. Jorge Posada hit his 30th homer to tie Yogi Berra's club record for a catcher as the Yankees won the first game 11-2. A sweep would have allowed New York to clinch home-field advantage through the postseason, but New York's bullpen couldn't hold a 2-0 lead after De Paula left. Jerry Hairston tied the game with a two-run triple in the eighth, and rookie Robert Machado had a one-out single in the 10th off Chris Hammond (3-2) for the go-ahead run.
Red Sox 7, Devil Rays 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Pedro Martinez threw three scoreless innings in his final playoff tuneup, and Manny Ramirez hit a two-run homer as the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. With their 17th win 24 games, the Red Sox improved to 95-65 -- the first time Boston has won that many since advancing to the World Series in 1986. Red Sox manager Grady Little had Martinez on a strict pitch count after naming him the starter for Boston's playoff opener Wednesday at Oakland.
Twins 5, Tigers 4, 11 innings
DETROIT -- Michael Cuddyer hit the first pitch of the 11th inning into the left-field seats and the Minnesota Twins beat Detroit, putting the Tigers one defeat from tying the modern-day record for losses. If Detroit (41-119) loses Saturday or Sunday against the Twins, the Tigers will tie the post-1900 record of 120 losses set by the 1962 New York Mets.
White Sox 11, Royals 2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jose Valentin hit a grand slam, and Frank Thomas and Carlos Lee also homered as the Chicago White Sox routed the Kansas City Royals. Jon Garland (12-13) pitched three-hit ball for eight innings, allowing only Carlos Beltran's leadoff homer in the fourth. Beltran became the sixth player since 1900 to have 100 runs, 100 RBIs and 30 stolen bases in three seasons. His 26th home run gave him 100 RBIs and 102 runs this year.
Mariners 9, Athletics 3
SEATTLE -- Joel Pineiro beat AL West champion Oakland for the fourth time this season and Mike Cameron homered as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Athletics. The Athletics' loss clinched home-field advantage for the New York Yankees throughout the AL playoffs. Pineiro (16-11) improved his career record against the A's to 6-1, including 4-0 in 2003.
Angels 5, Rangers 3
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Tim Salmon hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth as the Anaheim Angels beat the Texas Rangers. After left fielder Jermaine Clark robbed Chone Figgins of extra bases with a spectacular catch while crashing into the fence in the eighth, Ron Mahay (3-3) walked Jeff DaVanon. Garret Anderson grounded into a force, advanced on a wild pitch and scored when Salmon lined a 2-2 pitch to right center. Reynaldo Garcia forced in Anaheim's fifth run with a bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Wilson Delgado.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Braves 6, Phillies 0
PHILADELPHIA -- Horacio Ramirez pitched six sharp innings, and the Atlanta Braves moved closer to clinching home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs Friday with a victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the final night game at Veterans Stadium. The Braves entered the night with a one-game lead over San Francisco for the best record in the NL. The Giants played Los Angeles later Friday night.
Expos 5, Reds 1
CINCINNATI -- Tomo Ohka pitched a five-hitter and Brad Wilkerson homered as the Montreal Expos beat the Cincinnati Reds. The Expos' 82nd victory guaranteed them a second straight winning season under manager Frank Robinson. Montreal had not posted consecutive years over .500 since 1992-94. Before Montreal's first game at Great American Ball Park, a bronze statue of Robinson was unveiled outside the stadium.
Marlins 4, Mets 3
MIAMI -- With rainy weather, apathetic fans, unsettled ownership and losing records, the Florida Marlins have provided comic relief in recent seasons. Look who's laughing now. The surprising Marlins beat the New York Mets to clinch their first playoff berth since winning the 1997 World Series. They'll face the NL West champion Giants in a best-of-5 series beginning Tuesday in San Francisco.
Brewers 12, Astros 5
HOUSTON -- Richie Sexson homered twice and doubled as the Milwaukee Brewers beat Houston, dropping the Astros a half-game behind idle Chicago in the NL Central. There was no need for scoreboard watching at Minute Maid Park. The Pittsburgh-Cubs game at Wrigley Field was rained out earlier in the day and a doubleheader was scheduled for Saturday. Sexson hit an RBI double during a six-run second inning. He hit a solo homer off Rick White in the fifth and a two-run shot in the seventh off Kirk Bullinger.
Padres 5, Rockies 0
SAN DIEGO -- Adam Eaton and four relievers combined on a eight-hitter and the San Diego Padres opened their final series at Qualcomm Stadium by beating the Colorado Rockies. After playing 35 years in the Mission Valley stadium, the Padres will move into their new ballpark near the waterfront, Petco Park, next spring. The loss dropped the Rockies to 23-56 on the road, assuring them of their worst record ever away from Coors Field. Their previous worst was 26-55 last year.
