WILMINGTON SCHOOLS Turf delay holds up play at renovated stadium

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The weather will be the determining factor in whether Wilmington School District athletes will get to play at their home stadium this season.
The district has invested about $2 million on stadium renovations, which include new bleachers, an artificial playing surface, new lights, new concession stand and new press box.
Superintendent Dr. C. Joyce Nicksick said the artificial turf is now the main delay. She said the company began installing the playing surface on Wilmington's football/soccer field Sept. 20.
It takes four to five rain-free days to install the pad and 10 additional days for the turf to be installed, Nicksick said. Monday's rain stalled the process, she added.
Wilmington's first home varsity football game, scheduled for tonight against Greenville, was moved to the Union Area High School field.
The boys' soccer game originally scheduled for Thursday was moved to Monday against Hickory High School. The game will be played at Westminster College.
Nicksick also said that homecoming events and festivities have been postponed one week to Oct. 17.
