PGA GOLF Tway is off to another fast start

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Before this month, Bob Tway had gone more than eight years without a win on the PGA Tour. Now he's trying to position himself for his second straight victory.
Tway made seven straight birdies in Thursday's opening round of the Texas Open and finished with a 9-under 61 to tie Heath Slocum for the lead.
Tway and Slocum weren't the only ones to be helped by the favorable weather conditions as 107 of the 141 players in the field shot par or better.
Weather good for scoring
"If the weather forecast stays like today -- pretty calm in the morning and a little bit of wind in the afternoon -- the scores are going to be good," Tway said.
Tway took a few weeks off after winning the Bell Canadian Open on Sept. 7. It was his eighth career win and his first since the 1995 MCI Classic.
Slocum, going for his first win on the tour, credited his putting for a bogey-free round marked by several short birdie streaks. He got to 9 under on the 380-yard, par-4 16th before ending his round with two pars.
"I was struggling the last couple of weeks with speed and today my speed was kind of perfect for me," said Slocum, who finished in a tie for second at the Greater Milwaukee Open in July. "I was hitting exactly the line I saw and the speed matched it, which was pretty important."
Aaron Baddeley, who had seven birdies in an eight-hole span, finished with a 62, while Tom Byrum, Cameron Beckman, Cliff Kresge and Rory Sabbitini had 63s.
