AT A GLANCE
National Lung Screening Trial
St. Elizabeth Health Center and UPMC Horizon in Farrell, Pa., are part of a national study to determine if screening for lung cancer by X-ray or spiral CT scan will reduce lung cancer deaths in current or former smokers.
HOW IT WORKS
Participants are randomly assigned to get a free chest X-ray or spiral CT every year for three years. Researchers will contact participants at least once a year until 2009 to monitor their health.
WHO'S ELIGIBLE?
People may be eligible if:
They are between 55 and 74 years of age.
They are currently smoking, or have quit smoking within the last 15 years.
They have a history of long-time and/or heavy cigarette smoking.
They have never been diagnosed with lung cancer.
They are not currently undergoing treatment for any cancer (other than non-melanoma skin cancer).
They have not had any portion of their lung removed.
They are not participating in another cancer screening trial other than a trial to help stop smoking.
They have not had a chest scan within the last 18 months.
