YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State (0-2) lost to Pittsburgh 4-3 Wednesday.
Freshmen Gina Peretti and Nicole Muzechuk were double winners for the Penguins. Peretti won her singles match 7-6 (6), 5-7, 10-4 over Hayley Hughes, and teamed with Karen Najbert for an 8-3 win in doubles. Muzehcuk beat Emily Hughes 6-2, 6-2, and joined Heather Hagood for an 8-6 win in doubles.
Pittsburgh swept the other matches. In singles, it was Becky Emmers over Karen Najbert 6-4, 6-1, Annie Davies over Heather Hagood 6-2, 6-2, Laura Pegula over Andrea Dixon 6-2, 6-1 and Kenita Jude over Sarah Evans (6-1, 6-2). In doubles, Pegula and Jude defeated Evans and Dixon.

Reyes citedby Big East
SYRACUSE, N,Y. -- Walter Reyes, junior running back for the Syracuse University football team from Struthers High, was named the Big East Conference offensive player of the week.
Reyes rushed for 241 yards and four touchdowns in the Orangemen's 38-14 victory over Central Florida. He set a Carrier Dome record for rushing yards.
Earlier in the season, Reyes was named Big East co-player of the week following Syracuse's 49-47 overtime win over North Carolina on Sept. 6. Reyes scored three TDs and rushed for 191 yards.
He leads the nation in rushing yards (173.0) and scoring (16.67 points) per game, and is No. 2 in all-purpose yards (197.33) per game.
He has rushed for 519 yards in 75 carries for a 6.9-yard average, and scored eight TDs and 50 points.
Syracuse (2-1) plays host to Toledo (3-1) Saturday.
JFK wins sectional
WINDHAM -- The Warren JFK boys golf team shot 315 to win the Division III sectional tournament held at Riverside Golf Course Wednesday.
The Eagles advanced to next week's district at Seven Hills Country Club.
Rootstown was second with 326 and Columbiana shot 329 for third place.
The top three teams and three other individuals advanced to the district. Also advancing were Royce Mogdych and Zac Wajda, both from Maplewood, who scored 75 and 77, respectively.
The Warren JFK scorers were: Colin Clemente, 72; Nick Pawlikoski, 80: Pat Moro, 89; Anthony Mongrellazzo, 87, and Scott Difford, 76.
Columbiana's scorers were: Brian Gustafson, 80; Jason Hall, 75; Jared Patton, 82; David Vitko, 96; and David Jackson, 92

Michigan wins appeal
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Michigan basketball team has won its appeal and will be eligible to play in the 2004 NCAA tournament, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The decision was made by the NCAA's infractions appeals committee, which overturned the postseason-related portion of the infractions committee's May ruling, the newspaper said today.
Iverson signs
PHILADELPHIA -- Allen Iverson signed a multi-year contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers. The deal was announced at a special event for season ticket-holders at the Wachovia Center.
Terms were not announced, but a team source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Tuesday the extension was for four years, which could keep Iverson in Philadelphia through the 2008-09 season, and would pay him $76.7 million over four years.
Minnesota game with Michigan moved
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota moved its football game against Michigan up one day because of scheduling conflicts with the Minnesota Twins over the use of the Metrodome.
The game, originally scheduled to be played on Oct. 11, has been moved a day earlier due to a potential conflict with the American League Championship Series.
The Big Ten also conditionally approved rescheduling the Oct. 18 game against Michigan State to Oct. 17 if the Twins advance to the World Series.

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The NCAA has formally notified Missouri it has begun an investigation into the men's basketball program, which came under intense scrutiny this summer following the dismissal of troubled guard Ricky Clemons.

NEW YORK -- Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker was declared out of Saturday's Jockey Club Gold Cup with an injury to his right front foot.
The 1 1/4-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup, with a $1 million purse, was supposed to be a highly anticipated showdown between Empire Maker and Mineshaft, the top older horse and winner of the Suburban and Woodward in his last two starts.
