Parent-youth orientation
YOUNGSTOWN -- Young Marines, the official youth program of the Marine Corps and the focal point for the Marine Corps' Youth Drug Demand Reduction effort, is offering an annual parent and youth orientation at 10 a.m. Nov. 8 at ITAMS Post 3, 115 S. Meridian Road.
The group takes applications once a year for recruit training. Young Marines is a youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages 8 through completion of high school, that meets from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the second Saturday of every month. The program focuses on character building and leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. ADVANCED TRAINING
Cadets complete courses
Three Youngstown State University Army Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) cadets have completed airborne and air assault training. They are: Cadets Joseph Brinsko of Lowellville and Jared Souder of East Liverpool, Airborne School, Fort Benning, Ga.; and Cadet Joshua Colucci of Canfield, air assault school, Fort Campbell, Ky.
Local academy graduates
United States Military Academy Cadet John R. Palmer, son of Danny Greenwood and Diana Palmer of Cortland, and Scott D. Palmer of Cortland, completed basic training at the academy. Palmer graduated from Maplewood High School in 2003.
PROMOTIONS
Commander of recruiting
Army Lt. Col. Diane L. Martino, a 1981 graduate of Youngstown Chaney High School, is the new commander of the Army Recruiting Battalion in Pittsburgh.
Martino, a daughter of Betty Martino of Youngstown, was the Distinguished Military Graduate from the ROTC program at YSU, where she earned a bachelor's degree in law administration and received a regular Army commission in 1985. She also holds a master's degree in executive development for public administration from Ball State University, Ind.
During her assignments in the U.S. and overseas, she has received numerous decorations, including the Defense Meritorious Service, Army Commendation, Army Service and the Kosovo Campaign medals. Her military education includes adjutant general officer basic and advanced courses, combined arms and services staff school, and the command and general staff college.
DEPLOYED
Aboard USS Gettysburg
Navy Lt. j. g. Thomas J. Farina, son of Robin L. and Thomas J. Farina of Boardman, is on a six-month deployment aboard the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg, home-based at Mayport, Fla. Farina is a 1997 graduate of Boardman High School of Boardman, and a 2001 graduate of the Naval Academy with a bachelor of science degree.
USS Cole assignment
Navy Seaman Justin R. O'Hara, son of Angie M. and Michael D. O'Hara of Youngstown, is on a six-month deployment assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole, home-based in Norfolk, Va. O'Hara is a 1998 graduate of Youngstown Ursuline High School.
REUNIONS
The John Towle Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association will have All Ohio Day in Hudson on Oct. 3, 4 and 5, 2003. The national president, Duke Armendariz of San Antonio, Texas, will be present. Contact Airborne, 5459 Northcutt Place, Dayton 45414 for information.
