Young Leaders Conference
Jonathan Glaab, an Ursuline High School student, and Hayley Robinson, a junior at Boardman High School, are among 350 students nationwide selected for a six-day National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., next month. They will meet with members of the Washington press corps, members of Congress and other elected officials; view the three branches of government and the international community; and participate in leadership skill-building activities.
Scholars society member
LIBERTY -- Liberty High School student Brittanie Tillman, daughter of Anthony and Cynthia Tillman, was selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars, based on academic achievement. The membership, from the Atlanta-based organization, was announced by Claes Nobel, a member of the Nobel Prize family.

School program grants
Dominion East Ohio's Dominion Educational Partnership Program has awarded grants to fund projects and programs at three Mahoning Valley schools for the 2003-2004 school year.
Seacrest Elementary School was awarded a $1,000 grant for "Junior Landscapers," allowing pupils to work with a professional landscaper for a plant-growing project.
Warren Christian School was awarded $410 for the "Compound Connections" fifth-grade chemistry program.
Frank Ohl Middle School was awarded $845 for a program on current, voltage and resistance, as well as other properties of electricity.
Malone tutoring program
CANTON -- Malone College hosts America Reads -- America Counts, a free tutoring program for elementary pupils in the subjects of reading and math. Half-hour sessions are Mondays through Thursdays, 2:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the Weaver Child Development Center on the campus, 515 25th St. N.W. The free program is available to all Stark County elementary pupils, as well as pupils from any surrounding counties. Call (330) 471-8569.

Future City Competition
Registration deadline is Oct. 15 for the National Engineers Week Future City Competition. Pupils build a city of the future using donated SimCity 3000 software, create a 3-D model and write an abstract. A focus this year is designing ways to improve the health and safety of senior citizens. Ohio region finals are Jan. 24 in Columbus.

Volunteer patients sought
ROOTSTOWN -- The Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine's Standardized Patient Program is looking for men and women between ages 18 and 40 to portray patients for NEOUCOM's medical students. Disney opportunities
KENT -- A Walt Disney World recruiter will visit Kent State University as part of the Walt Disney World College Program at 5 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Student Recreation Center. Students will have a chance to take one of six program courses teaching hospitality management, organizational leadership and other skills. Westminster gets ranking
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College is one of the nation's best institutions for undergraduate education, according to the 2004 edition of The Princeton Review annual college guide, The Best 351 Colleges. Only about 10 percent of the colleges in America, and only two Canadian colleges, are in the book. Rankings are based on The Princeton Review's survey of 106,000 students.

YSU-Stark State pact
YOUNGSTOWN -- Officials at Youngstown State University and Stark State College of Technology have signed an agreement that will make it easier for Stark State students to enter YSU as juniors and earn a four-year degree. The agreement also allows Mahoning Area Consortium Tech Prep high school students to enroll in two-year technology programs at Stark State with credit for between one and five college courses, mirroring the current agreement between YSU and MAC Tech Prep.
YSU's bachelor of science degree in applied science has been restructured to allow Stark State students to make a seamless transfer to that program, entering YSU as juniors with 62 hours completed and 62 needed to earn the bachelor of science degree.

Named association leader
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Dr. Russell Martin, associate professor of history at Westminster College, was recently named vice president and president-elect of the Association for the Study of Eastern Christianity. The professional organization emerged out of a Harvard-Yale group that is putting together a volume on the history of Russian Orthodoxy, Martin said. Martin is contributing one of the chapters.
Martin has appeared as an expert on an A & amp;E "Biography" broadcast on Ivan the Terrible and has been an expert witness in a Canadian civil trial about the Russian royal family. He is the co-founder of the Muscovite Biographical Database, a Russian-American computerized register based in Moscow of early modern Russian notables.
Accountant group board
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Paul Wozniak, professor of accounting at Westminster College, has been appointed a member of the Strategic Advisory Board of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). The mission of the 50-member board is to furnish guidance and counsel to PICPA on programs and services, legislation, and regulatory, legal and professional issues.
