Pickup truck crashes, leaving 2 men injured
CANFIELD -- Daniel Siskowic, 21, of Pheasant Run, was in critical condition this morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown with a head injury after a one-vehicle crash at 11:25 p.m. Thursday in Canfield Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Siskowic had been riding in the bed of a pickup truck driven by Jake W. Kasten, 21, of West Main Street, Canfield. Kasten was in stable condition today at the hospital.
Kasten, traveling northwest on Mercedes Place, just west of Seville Drive, lost control of the pickup, which struck a curb, went off the left side of the road and went airborne, the patrol said.
Siskowic was ejected when the pickup struck a rock as it landed and overturned, coming to rest on its side.
Probation extended
GIRARD -- Failing to pay fines and to follow the terms of his probation have landed a Youngstown State University anthropology professor another six-month probation term.
Gary Fry, 63, of Mount Everett Road, Hubbard, was originally charged last year with a felony count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and possession of a weapon while intoxicated.
The motor vehicle charge was later reduced to attempted unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Fry was originally fined $400 and costs, placed on one year of probation and ordered to undergo drug and/or alcohol assessment.
Court records indicate he still owes $258, despite being found guilty during a March hearing of a probation violation for not paying. It was during that hearing the probation was extended.
Public nuisance order
YOUNGSTOWN -- A magistrate in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court has granted the city's request to declare Stiles Super Market a public nuisance and order it closed.
Owners of the East Side market, at 1922 McGuffey Road, have 14 days to file an objection to Gene Fehr's decision and ask Judge James C. Evans to reverse it.
City officials filed a lawsuit in common pleas court two weeks ago, seeking to have the store declared a public nuisance because of drug sales on and near the premises.
The shop has been padlocked since Sept. 11, when the city obtained a temporary order allowing it to be closed. Police have said the store has a reputation as a place where regular drug activity occurs.
Police received complaints from residents this spring and summer of gunfire, loitering and apparent drug sales in the parking lot.
GM group aids boy's wish

The network presented the check Thursday to Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeast Ohio. The $5,000 was the proceeds from the network's golf outing.
The foundation's mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.
