Democratic candidate attends event

CANFIELD -- U.S. Sen. John Edwards, a 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, visited the Mahoning Valley to raise money for his campaign.
Edwards, a former trial lawyer from North Carolina, was at the Canfield home of Atty. Elizabeth Bernard, a partner in the Youngstown law firm Harshman, Bernard & amp; Ramage. The private reception Friday was closed to the press, and Edwards was unavailable to comment.
This is the first campaign visit to the Valley for any of the 10 announced Democratic candidates.
It was not disclosed how much money Edwards raised during the visit, but Edwards' campaign must list the amount on its third-quarter finance report, which has to be filed next month with the Federal Election Commission. Edwards' latest campaign filing with the FEC, which shows money raised through June 30, lists no donations from anyone in the Mahoning Valley.
The Ohio Poll, sponsored by the University of Cincinnati, released Wednesday showed Edwards last, far behind U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri in the Ohio Democratic primary, scheduled for March 2004.
Supporters of U.S. Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, who has raised the most money from Valley residents among the Democratic presidential candidates, are trying to schedule him for a visit to the area in upcoming months.
