SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY, Syracuse, N.Y.
Junior Rachel Monk of Hermitage, Pa., was named an academic peer adviser for the School of Architecture for the 2003-04 academic year. In cooperation with faculty and staff, student peer advisers help first-year students with the academic, social, cultural and emotional transition from high school to college. Advisors must have a grade point average of at least 2.5 and maintain their relationship with their advisees throughout the academic year.
EASTERN MENNONITE UNIVERSITY, Harrisonburg, Va.
Kendra Nissley of Columbiana is among 15 first-year students accepted into the honors program for the 2003-2004 school year, for outstanding academic and leadership qualities. The program includes a half-tuition scholarship award, a specified curricular component and a one-to-one mentoring relationship with a faculty member.
Nissley, a 2003 graduate of South Range High School, is the daughter of Dale and Marian Nissley and plans to major in German. She is a member of Midway Mennonite Church.
MIAMI UNIVERSITY, Oxford
Matthew Dorrance of Canfield has been inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a selective, nonprofit honors organization that recognizes first- and second-year undergraduate students who excel academically. Dorrance is a sophomore in the Richard T. Farmer School of Business and received a valedictorian scholarship from the university. He is a member of Miami Marketing Enterprises and the Student Leadership Program.
BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE, Berea
Senior theater/political science major Dave Leone of Boardman will be performing as Vladimir Rodey in the upcoming theater production of Anton Checkhov's "The Three Sisters." A 2000 graduate of Boardman High School, the actor is the son of Rich Leone.
Senior early childhood education major Kelly Naples of Canfield was selected to be an orientation leader for Orientation Weekend 2003, helping acclimate new students to campus and leading weekend activities.
The 2000 graduate of Canfield High School is the daughter of George and Robin Naples. At the college, she is the student director of orientation, president of the Alpha Phi sorority, director of the Health Promotion Grant board and outreach and education director of the Dance Marathon fund-raiser for the Elizabeth Glasier Pediactric AIDS Foundation.
EDINBORO UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA
Physiology/criminology major Emily Paske of Sharpsville, Pa., has received the Mabel Hamlett Scholarship, which is awarded to a full-time student who has a physical disability and a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. Paske, a graduate of Sharpsville High School, is the daughter of Sara and David Paske.
GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY,Washington, D.C.
Ariella Viehe, a senior majoring in international history, has accepted an internship with the Brookings Institution's Saban Center for Middle East Policy. Fluent in German and Arabic, Viehe studied last year at the London School of Economics.
The 2000 valedictorian graduate of Poland Seminary High School is the daughter of Dr. Fred Viehe of Boardman, a history professor at Youngstown State University, and Dr. Verena Drake, a faculty member at the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut.
LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, Chicago
Senior physics/psychology major Nathan Papalia was among 80 students selected this spring to participate in the 10-day National Youth Leadership Forum on International Medicine in Australia.
The 2000 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown plans to study pediatrics. He has received a Father Gert Memorial Award for Physics and several scholarships and is a member of two national honor societies.
