ANAHEIM, Calif. -- John Lackey pitched a five-hitter and rookie Tom Gregorio had a two-run single for Anaheim. Lackey (10-16) struck out four and walked two in his second career shutout. He had lost his previous three starts and five of six. Gil Meche (15-13) pitched because Ryan Franklin had a stiff neck, and allowed three runs and six hits in five innings.

BOSTON -- Tony Batista hit a grand slam off John Burkett (11-9) in a seven-run first for Baltimore. Pat Hentgen (7-8) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. Burkett (11-9) allowed seven hits and seven runs -- six of them earned. He left after retiring just one batter, the shortest start of his 14 major league seasons.
Tigers 4, Royals 3
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Detroit (40-118) remained two losses short of the '62 Mets record for losses. Shane Loux (1-1) earned his first major league victory by allowing one run and three hits in five innings. Jimmy Gobble (4-5) gave up four runs in the first. Fernando Rodney got five outs for his third save.
White Sox 9, Yankees 4
CHICAGO -- Esteban Loaiza (20-9) became the fifth 20-game winner this season, allowing three runs and five hits in six innings. Mike Mussina (17-8), bidding for his 200th win, gave up a season-high eight runs -- all in the sixth inning. Jose Valentin hit a three-run homer, and Carlos Lee drove in a pair of runs in Chicago's big inning.
Athletics 5, Rangers 3
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Jose Guillen, playing with a broken bone in his left hand, hit a two-run homer for Oakland and bunted home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Tim Hudson (16-7) allowed two runs -- one earned -- and five hits in seven innings. Chad Harville pitched the ninth for his first major league save.
Blue Jays 5, Devil Rays 3
TORONTO -- Kelvim Escobar (13-9) tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts, allowing two runs, eight hits and five walks in seven innings. Josh Phelps hit a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth.

Marlins 6, Phillies 5
MIAMI -- Jeff Conine homered for the second straight game, and Juan Encarnacion also homered as Florida built a six-run lead then hung on. Josh Beckett (9-8) took a two-hit shutout into the eighth. Beckett allowed four runs and six hits. Chad Fox struck out Chase Utley with two on to end the eighth, and Ugueth Urbina pitched a perfect ninth for the save. Brett Myers (14-9) lost to Florida for the fourth time this year, giving up five runs and seven hits in five-plus innings.
Astros 2, Giants 1
HOUSTON -- Pinch-hitter Jose Vizcaino had a two-run single off Sidney Ponson (3-6) with two outs in the seventh. Roy Oswalt (10-5) won his fourth straight start since coming off the disabled list, allowing three hits in eight innings, including Pedro Feliz's second-inning homer. Billy Wagner got three straight outs for his 44th save, striking out pinch-hitter Barry Bonds to start the ninth.

CINCINNATI -- Sammy Sosa tied Mickey Mantle for 10th place all-time with his 536th homer, and Shawn Estes (8-11) pitched a four-hitter for his eighth career shutout. Paul Bako hit a three-run double for the Cubs. Josh Hall (0-2) allowed all seven runs -- three earned -- and six hits in 22/3 innings.
Cardinals 8, Brewers 4
MILWAUKEE -- J.D. Drew homered and Matt Morris (11-8) allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings for St. Louis. Jason Isringhausen got five outs for his 20th save. Matt Kinney (10-13) allowed five runs, seven hits and four walks in five innings.
Braves 9, Expos 1
ATLANTA -- Russ Ortiz (21-7) allowed three hits in five innings, extending his scoreless streak to 14 innings. Rafael Furcal went 3-for-4, and Gary Sheffield, Andruw Jones and Robert Fick each drove in two runs. Zach Day (9-8) gave up six runs and seven hits in 31/3 innings.
Dodgers 2, Padres 1, 11 innings
SAN DIEGO -- Pinch-hitter Jolbert Cabrera drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the 11th. Paul Shuey (6-4) threw a perfect 10th and Eric Gagne got his 55th save, tying him with John Smoltz for second place on the single-season saves list. Gagne also extended his major league record for consecutive saves to 63, dating to last year.
Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 3
DENVER -- Randy Johnson beat Colorado for the eighth straight time and Danny Bautista homered twice. Johnson (6-8) allowed two runs on seven hits and improved to 8-0 in his past nine starts against Colorado. Matt Mantei pitched a perfect ninth for his 27th save in 30 chances. Bautista drove in three runs and was 3-for-4. It was his third career multi-homer game. Jose Jimenez (2-10) gave up four runs and seven hits. Juan Uribe hit a two-run homer and Todd Helton added a solo shot for the Rockies.
